City boy moves to small town and gets 5 girls and a rooster (which only woke me once, but that's a different story). I have never raised anything resembling livestock/fowl which is how the city ordinance classify my girls. I have always had either a cat or dogs in the past. They seem pretty smart as I have trained them to come when I whistle. I have two smallish coops and will be putting a fence around them to keep them somewhat restrained. They are about 12 weeks old now. Do I need to clip their wings to keep the confined or will they stay in the yard I have fenced off? The girls are buff orpington's.

Hey there,

Hello and welcome to Backyard Chickens! It's a pleasure to meet you, my name is Kaitlyn. You'll meet many friendly and knowledgable folks here. Glad you enjoy the chicken-keeping experience! Sounds like a nice little flock you have there. Looking forward to hearing more of your adventures during the journey!

Hm... as far as it goes with your wing question, I never clipped my hens wings and I honestly prefer not to. How tall is the particular fence? It's your call, but I doubt you'll have any issues. Good luck! Have a happy Thanksgiving, a good evening and God bless!

Best Regards,
-Kaitlyn

I've never clipped wings either but the run is covered so even if they wanted to, the birds couldn't fly out. I've read of other members having an issue with chickens getting out of the yard though...you might have to wait and see how yours do.

Best of luck to you and thanks for joining us!

to Backyard chickens!

The answer to your wing clipping question depends on the breed of chickens you have. some will wander more than others. Leghorns is an example. I have clipped their wings before. I had one that would get out and wander the neighborhood. I clipped the flight feathers on one wing for them. I did not clip the other breeds though.
