Hi, I'm a long time lurker and due to an issue I'm currently having I decided to actually start posting. I'm 24 and I started caring for chickens when I was 16 because my family was running through eggs like no tomorrow. I started out with 3 adult hens and the usual 6 chickens and then maybe 2-3 yrs later my cousin gave us 3 more from his flock that he didn't want (one had a scissored beak and the others were too small for his liking).
My parents were always of the mindset that we'd get the chickens we got and that's it but next year I plan on moving and continuing to raise layers. From our original flock, there are still 2 living and 1 is currently having health issues. Breed wise, we've had a ton of variation since we kinda just grabbed randomly from large tubs at our local barn. The 2 we still have are a buff orpington and an ameraucana. I know for a fact we've had a blue andalusian, 2 previous ameraucanas, a lakenvelder, a black star, a barred rock, a rhode island red, a red sex link and a brahma. Not sure of any other. I do plan on getting a cuckoo maran, another buff orpington/orpington, an ancona, a barnevelder and a welsummer among others.
My chickens have always been super friendly and I genuienly enjoy raising them no matter what breed. I also have an 8 yr old mini potbelly pig and a cat. My girlfriend is heavily involved in the dog show/hunting dog community, specifically involving treeing walker coonhounds and other similar breeds (redbones, bluetick, black and tans, etc.). I've worked on a farm before and I was originally planning on becoming a veterinary technician, but unfortunately I suffered brain damage a couple years ago during my last semester and I was unable to complete my studies (I am now quick to stress and have PTSD, big yikes).
Thanks for reading! Hopefully I'll be able to post more soon about my upcoming new coop and new chicks~
