Hi Guys,

I'm a new chicken owner and I'm finding this Site to be a wealth of information. I have three Australorps, three Wyandottes, and an abandoned "wild" chick that are all about 7-weeks old. I'm in the process of building their coop and have them temporarily housed in a hutch within a 13'x7' dog kennel (run). Thus far, my family and I are having a blast and I wanted to thank everyone here for sharing their experiences and knowledge.

Aloha Steve. My brother has been to Hawaii many times - he got hooked on macadamia nuts and kona coffee. He absolutely loves Hawaii and took pictures of the wild chickens.

Our experience? Forget about our experience.

Share your experience with us. How exciting it must
be to have chickens in Hawaii. How do you feel that
differs from our mostly "mainland" flocks?

What issues do you face? What commercial foods do
you have in your area?

See, you can educate us about chickens.

Hawaii....a whole new meaning to surfing the web.

Diva, good to hear. I actually have about 50 coffee trees and have been processing my own kona coffee for about 7- years. we've recently been hit with an introduced pest, the coffee borer beetle which has really affected the State's coffee growers. Currently working on some pest control measures that have helped to control the insect, but it's been a pain.

Spook, from what I've read in the various posts here, I think that I have it kind of easy compared to what mainlanders have to deal with. Our weather is a lot more moderate with temps ranging from 50s-90s ( usually between 75-85), predators are mostly limited to dogs and cats ( mongoose and Hawaiian hawk will take chicks), and so many feral chickens running around no-one can really complain about any crowing if you have cockerals. We have some farm and garden stores where I can pick up feed and supplies. I'm feeding the chicks an organic starter feeder and will stay with organic feed when we hit the laying phase. the eggs will be for family and friends so I figure it'll be worth the small added expense. oh, I am building the coop to be as hurricane proof as I can, lol.
