Hubby told me that hens can crow!!

I had a crowing hen when I was growing up. One of our Barred Rock hens, already laying, suddenly got very aggressive, started crowing, and her tail feathers grew out like a rooster! She was still hen colored though, and laying eggs. I wonder if she had some sort of hormonal imbalance? We ended up eating her because she was too aggressive and would attack people.

This one loves my attetion, but she beats on every one, so she is by herself until i find her a boy that she wont beat on. lol

her crow is so funny, i love it. lol

We have a hen who definitely is a lesbian. She tries to tread the other hens, and was so aggressive that we finally separated her into her own cage. And every morning, she crows. Sorta. It sounds like someone trying to start a lawn mower. But it's definitely her answer to a crow.

oh dear!

My plan is to have 3 or 4 hens, no roosters, because they will have to be ninja hens...no chickens allowed in town limits here. Now I find out that they may crow anyway?! Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

We had hens when my children were young (25 years ago) and never had a hen crow on us so I guess we were just lucky.

I had one of my Sebright hens crow before too, but she was also with a rooster at the time. She's only done it once, way before she started laying and hasn't done it since.

Hens have only one ovary. If it becomes infected and ceases to function, well, no more eggs. This can also be why she starts crowing. And why she would come to a bad end....

My only crowing hen was a Seabright.
