Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

They are about 1 or 2 weeks apart.
I gave them the leftover watermelon shell this morning. They weren't very thrilled! They looked at me, pecked at my boots and said " WHERE ARE THE MEALWORMS!!!!!"
I had to give in, before they all attacked.

Honestly I'm thoroughly unimpressed with it. The directions alone were horrendous and the materials used were very light weight wood. It smells like cedar. If it is, it's a very poor quality. I croaked a couple of pieces while trying to make heads or tails of the directions and it just feels very light. I painted it because unless you live in a place that has no precipitation ever, this coop won't last. I bought it because the price was right and I was in a pinch because I had three hens sitting in my apt in a dog kennel. That being said....The seem to be very happy in it. They were not pleased being sent to bed last night, but they do love the abundance of earthworms I gave them while I was doing yard work yesterday. I spent more money on hardware cloth and paint as well as better locks than I did for the actual coop. Also, I feel like they need more space..... So I'm working on building a few grazing areas in my yard and making a 'tunnel' from the coop to connect them.

It looks very cute, hopefully it will hold up well for you. If nothing esle, it will tide you over for awhile until you could build something bigger, then you could still keep it handy in case you ever had to separate some birds for some reason (grow-out pen, brooder, etc). If you look at the coops and runs section of BYC, you will get tons of ideas on how to cheaply build what you need, a lot of people can get wood pallets for free by scrounging and they've built some great coops out of those with very little carpentry skills. Good luck and keep us posted, whatever you end up with!

Good Morning Everybody~ I hope all is well !!!

What does it mean when a chicken runs up to another chicken and then they both fluff their feathers and stick their chests out and then walk away? Is that a secret Chicken Club greeting? An "I'm-the-Big Kahuna" thing? Chicken Code for "Psst..Don't lay an egg".....?

OH wait'll you guys hear THIS one! I'm fairly certain you'll guess exactly how this story will end......

A couple of months ago we gave DH's co-worker 2 chickens (red sex links from TSC). We had 15 and that was too many for the coop and Jay was interested in raising chickens so they made a deal: 2 chickens In exchange for a nice, big barrel for composting. Anyway, DH just called to tell me that one of (grrrr) Jay's chickens (grrrrr) laid her first egg this morning!
I want my chicken back!
