Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Thanks~ I may take you up on that offer. I definitely want to try hatching eventually. I'll know if she goes broody if she sits on eggs and won't move, right? The egg was brown...not much bigger than a golf ball.

You have an austrolorp and orpintons as your brown layers? Or do you have a wyandotte aswell? I would of put money down that it would have been a white egg! Your brown layers are the bigger breeds, which take longer to mature.
And yes, when a hen dosnt move from the nesting box and becomes alittle grump she normaly is broody..they do come out to eat and drink once in awhile...my Silkie hasnt come out at all, so i had to put water and feed right in front of her!

I have an australorp, SL Wyandotte, silkie, RIR, red sex links, brown leghorns (the only white egg layers I believe), a barred rock, orpingtons, and an EE. Do you think it was the SLW? Has anything hatched from under your silkie yet?

Wow, I miss a morning of checking in and look at what happens, 14 new posts and Lisa's first egg!

I'm still betting on that cranky australorp as the egg-layer...can't wait to see the pic!

He is gorgeous! I've always heard Welsummer roosters were especially beautiful and now I know why, lucky for you to have him.

My guess would be red sexlink. The larger birds (orpintons and wyandottes) mature around 6-8 months of age..but i guess it still could be one of them aswell. Just keep an eye out, to see whos sitting in the nest boxes! My hens lay in the AM from 8-12 lol.
I just candled the broody silkies eggs this morrning , they all seem pretty close to hatch time!! Im so freakin excited!

Yay! Can't wait to see pictures of all the Littles! How many eggs do you have under her?
I think you're right. The two RSLs we gave my husband's co-worker started laying this week also. Not sure which one laid the egg though. We have 3. Whoever laid it is my new favorite girl LOL

Before I forget...here's Mr. Blue the Roo

I am really new to the chicken raising. I seem to read so much info. and still feel clueless! My 12 are approx. 17 weeks old. I have 10 Hens and 2 Roos. 1 Hen just started laying. We were surprised because we had anticipated it in August. I go out to the coop early morning to spend time, do the chores and observe their behavior. I noticed this morning that the more docile of the 2 Roos has bent toes (not sure what they're called) but its the index one on each side that bends outward. I had noticed it only on one side and thought it was a birth defect. What can that be and why did it happen to both sides?
I haven't seen the Roos being aggressive towards each other at all. The main Roo does go around biting the girls though! Two questions: should we cull the one with the toe issues? And is it normal for the Roo to bite and chase the girls? No matter what color they are.

Do you plan on showing your Rooster or hens? If not, then keep him around. the chasing and biteing the hens is the Roo trying to breed. Thehens will try to run away because they dont understand whats going on just yet.
