The other day,I had a hawk almost got one of my chickens. He grab her by the tail and she got away but she lost a lot of feathers. We had to wait until that evening before we realized that she was ok. Now I keep a better eye on them.

Glad she's ok! Iv never had a problem with hawks..just fox and raccoons. We have coyotes that live close but never had a problem with them either.

I'm so excited, someone asked for a dozen eggs to put under their broody hen! I can't wait to see the results of this experiment : )

Where is Glorie Winery? I can send my mom, it will do her good to get out. I want to give out hard-to-find wines to my Florida friends this year.

Hello Everyone, I missed you guys so I'm back again, yay!

I tried to read up on all that I've missed but my eyes are not having that tonight

So how are all of my chicken friends? And the critters? I hope all is well in the land of the backyard chicken!

Oh, and I posted about my new additions, mostly newly hatched chicks. I was down to 6 chickens 2 weeks ago (darn foxes) so I built the Taj Ma Coop :LOL:

It could still use some help in the decorating department.. Maybe some paint and upgraded roosts and nesting boxes. For now my chickens are very happy in their new fortress. And they still free range on the days that I am home.
So, with a huge coop for 6 chickens, I knew I was in for chicken trouble. I collected eggs from my girls and set them in the incubator. While they were cookin, I bought (3) 2 week old pullets, blue orpington, golden laced wyandotte and wheaten ameraucana. Once the eggs started hatching, I picked up some day old blue cochin bantams, silver sebrights, buff Orpingtons and silver laced Wyndottes. today my mother (unexpectedly) brought me a couple of mixed 4 month old pullets. I'm thinking Sumatra and black australorp? So, yea, I have 36 chickens right now and about 8-10 more eggs still cookin in the incubator. I was doing good avoiding chicken math, I really was! I guess it was just a matter of time

I keep nagging (errr...reminding!) my DH to enclose the run on The Nugget Coop but he hasn't had the time. He let them outside to freerange last night while we went to a wake. I was a nervous wreck the whole time we were gone. They were fine but it was such a huge risk. I feel bad ~I've been ignoring the big girls. I haven't let them out to forage or even sit in their run to keep them company lately. They're braver now that they're older and cross the road into the woods. It's a PITA to get them back into our yard. Our road is a dead end and very quiet with only a few houses on it but the neighbors are weird and unfriendly and if they have to stop their car to let a chicken cross the road they get this LOOK that I fantasize about slapping off of them. Anyway, I really have to get back onto some kind of schedule. Hopefully once school starts there will be some structure. Perhaps it would free up some time if I stopped playing Candy Crush Saga and Bejeweled Blitz.... ?

Not sure if it's the soil around here, the grapes (not sweet enough?), or maybe the wine isn't aged long enough? Most seem "young" and too dry and defnitely like vinegar. I'd like to try the Cabernet Franc your husband liked and I want to pick up a bottle or 2 of that pumpkin wine for Thanksgiving. If your husband likes red, try 87 South by Robibero. It's a blend of Cabernet Franc, merlot & cabernet. It has a peppery finish...really good! And Stoutridge is a beautiful place. They were our last stop at the Wreath event. The man (was he blonde? about 50?) couldn't wait to get us out of there! Snarky is the perfect word to describe him!
