I know how you feel Lisa that happen to me too! I helped him out of the shell but he was so weak he couldn't stand and a couple hours later he die. I buried him under my deck. It broke my heart but now 3 weeks later I have 5 wonderful chick growing like crazy.

We just set another 17 Orpington and EE eggs in the incubator yesterday. If anybody is interested (or you know someone who might be) let me know~

Yes, we have several farms that lend our school eggs to incubate in the classroom then the farms take them back.

Hi Lisa, My chick that died was a normal size. I think if I help him sooner he might of made it. He was having trouble getting out of his shell the night before. I thought he would hatched by the time I got up the next morning but I was wrong. It is so sad when they don't make it.

I know the feeling. I just hatched out 17, they go to their new homes tomorrow and I am setting another 42 next month! Did I mention I have 30 in the brooder? I really need to finish building those breeding pens.

You did your best...there's always some runts :-(
The one that died pipped early last Saturday. By evening we thought it was a goner but saw the egg moving so we let it go. We probably shouldn't have. By Sunday afternoon, the other 6 hatched but this one was struggling to zip so we intervened. We kind of knew it wasn't going to make it but we couldn't not try, ya know? Another late-hatcher had hatched by itself but part of the shell was stuck to its back and the chick was still attached to the shell by a piece of membrane. It dragged the shell around the incubator for quite awhile before we helped that one too. I read in one of the hatching threads NOT to help but it's so hard not to!
