Huge protrusion from vent!! Is my hen in danger???

It is probably due to the prolapse being swollen. I would tey to push it back inside and hold it there for a few minutes while you hold her in a towel after the bath.

The white liquid is urates, the kidney waste. Is she also pooping normal droppings? I would soak her in warm soapy water at least once a day to keep her clean. Use the honey or a sugar paste with water, and that can help reduce swelling. Keep the vent lubricated as long as the prolapse is out. It can take days for a prolapse to stay in, but just keep trying to push it back in a few times a day. It may come out whenever she strains, poops, or lays an egg. You can temporarily stop her from laying by keeping her in the dark for 16 hours a day. Here is a good article to read:

Sorry - missed the bottom part of this. What should I use to keep the vent lubricated? Do I push whatever cream inside, or only apply it externally? I have been keeping her in the dark for longer hours to prevent her from laying. Thanks for all of this!

Apply the honey or cream to the exposed prolapse. Lubricant, vaseline, or a nontoxic cream or oil is fine, just don’t let it dry out while it stays out. Mucus membranes will dry out and turn black, so you want to prevent that.

OK - I think I got this. Going to set up her bath now and clean her off. Then I'll put honey on the prolapse and push it back in. If it pops out I just keep it lubricated and try to put it in again later. Thank you for all of this! I'm feeling more confident than when I started out. I'm really so grateful for this forum!!!

I think I made things worse :(. I gave her a bath and had her head under a towel so she was calm. I tried to wash her feathers as best I could. After drying her off, I attempted multiple times to push the vent back in (using honey, then vaseline) also while she was under a towel. She was pushing back so hard, and wheezing through her nostrils as she was pushing it out again. I made a few attempts but she was really resisting so I finally stopped. Her vent now looks even worse than before! It's really red, and she's making this yipping sound like a puppy. I put her back in the crate and covered it with towels so she can be calm and rest. But she is still yipping. I feel awful! I think I may have hurt her. More photos below after the ordeal (again, graphic). Who knew I'd be taking so many pictures of a vent! I’m sorry that she became upset. I would just let her rest and hopefully, she will be more comfortable to sleep. It is nice a pink, and the tissue looks healthy. It can be possible for more of it to come out. Let us know how she is doing tomorrow.

Back again. I came home late from work and I just don't have the energy to do a repeat of last night. She was so freaked out and yelping like a dog for the next few hours. Tomorrow I'll try again (if that's the best course of action). This evening it seemed that she was preparing to lay an egg (and was making that yelping sound again). I put the towels over the cage to calm her and put her to bed. I've been trying to only allow her 8 hours of daylight. I hope that was the right move. Below are photos from today. The white stuff (urates?) is still dripping out but not constantly like it was yesterday. It looks like she was pooping when I snapped these pictures. She is eating and drinking no problem, but not pooping much. Thoughts about next steps??? I hope these vent pictures aren't wearing people out :(

I just read on some other posts that some vent prolapses went in on their own. Is that possible? Should I wait for that to happen (while keeping her clean and isolated from the others)? Or should I continue to try to push it back in? I do feel like I'm in a little over my head :(
