Yep. Lost a bunch while we were in the hospital with my boy.
Had a friend promise she'd come up every night and close up the animals, make sure everyone was tucked in. Come to find out she missed three days.
It was also awful hot those three days. Here's a list of our losses:
1 BR hen
2 BA pullets
4 RIR pullets
3 BL pullets
total: 10 hens/pullets I'm assuming to heat exhaustion/thirst as they weren't watered for three days in 90 degree heat.
10 three week old chicks to some unknown predator.
I had placed 10 of our 13 three week olds into our "nursery" run while we were in the hospital. It is predator proof IF IT'S CLOSED UP AT NIGHT. It was left open for three nights, all that was left of those 10 babies were the wings, and feet, plus one mostly-eaten carcass.
Plus, the 2 kitten, which were dropped off at the end of our driveway a few weeks ago? Both were missing until I found one of them near death at the far end of the property this afternoon while mowing. She seems like she'll recover, she's responded well to the water and baby food I've given her. Our vet will see her in the AM if she's not more improved.
Our boxer is about 7 pounds thinner. He was also without food and water for three days.
I am beyond angry with this woman. I called her and made her come up and see all my dead animals. She was in tears and called me a terrible person for making her see that. I'M a terrible person. She was also paid a decent monetary amount for her gas and time.
Anyway...it was just a real crapper of an end to a bloody viscious week.
Thanks for listening.
