I know that during incubation humidity should be about 50% and during lock down around 70%. I am currently in lockdown and my humidity is at 75% and there is a lot of condensation on veiwing windows. A couple of drops have fallen on the eggs. Do i need to do something?

In my opinion 50% for the first 17 days is high, but that's irrelevant at this point. A lot of condensation is technically too much. I'd let a little out (lift the lid) and see if 70% would work better for you.

What do you typically run your humidity at during the 21 days?

I use the dry method incubation. If my bator holds above 25% dry I run completetly dry, if it doesn't I add a wet sponge to hold it around 30%. I monitor my air cells for confirmation.

I use this method: http://letsraisechickens.weebly.com...anuals-understanding-and-controlling-humidity
I swear by this method-at least for the styrofoam bators. I'm still trying to gather info as to how well it works in different types of bators other than styrofoam.

Ok thanks. I am getting a new incubator this weekend...Hova Bator 1588. Its styrofoam. Right now im using a friends which is also styrofoam. Have not had good luck so far :(

A lot of users that go by the 50% during the first 17 days do not have successfull hatches because, (especially in the styros) it tends to drown the chicks at hatch time or they grow too big and can not turn to hatch because the air cells have not progressed. That and those manuals give the wrong temps for still air bators too. It's all finding what works for you with your bator. I have an older little giant with the fan kit installed, but I have been looking at the Hova Bator with the "picture window".

That's exactly what I ordered. It's all digital and I am hoping that it will help me getting better/stable temp control. I think I will try to go with the lower humidity thought. My air cells are not where they are supposed to be right now. I am very new to this. Did not really know what I was doing. Unfortunately I don't think any of my eggs are still living at this point. My 18 month old turned the temp up to 103 and it was several hours before I caught it. Because I wanted to give them the every opportunity I thought I would keep them in there until atleast day 24. It's really too bad because out of 13 eggs I had 8 that had developed. I am getting more eggs on Monday. My new incubator is due to arrive today. So it will give me all weekend to get use to it. Fingers crossed. X

You'll have to let me know what you think of it. Just make sure you check the temp/humidity on the bator with a thermometer/hygrometer that you know to be accurate because the bators are known to be off on their gages as well. A lot of people don't REALLY know what they are doing for the first hatch. I didn't. I had bought a new thermoemter but didn't check it before using it and ended up with one chick hatched day 24 and one that hatched but died on day 25. I had 17 at lockdown. I thought they looked behind, but I was hoping I was wrong. They were all moving and energetic. Turned out my thermometer was 6 degrees off. I felt so bad. Before I did a second hatch (which turned out awesome,) I made sure I had three thermometers and a whole lot more knowledge of incubation and humidity and the why's and how's and I haven't had another bad hatch (knock on wood.) It's a learning process some of us just get the harder lesson in the beginning. The important thing is to not give up, learn what went wrong, correct it and try again until you figure out what works for you and your incubator.

I got the new bator in the mail today. I have had it set up for 9 hours now. Literally all i did was plug it in and it has been running perfectly! Temp between 99.7 and 100.1 and humidity right at 31%. I have checked this with 2 other thermom/hygrometers and it is running spot on. I am so excited. Gonna run all night/day tomorrow and then set eggs on Monday...cannot wait. Ill keep you up to date.

Sounds promising. I can't wait to see how it goes!
