Local news is saying only 25% of Houstonians carry home flood insurance.
Some areas HAVE to...most areas here don't.
The thing with getting flood cover, if you live on a flood plain, the premiums can be ridiculously high....
It's often an additional "extra" with house insurance, I was just wondering what it is for cars... I'm in a dry climate so it's not something I've ever worried about/checked on. Loss of a car/household of cars could be a HUGE expense. Hopefully it's covered for those who've lost them in this event.

And may have been someone who cared enough to try and save them - and then still have to leave them behind. :(

Yeah, it looked pretty bad in the area. The entire house, yard and street was flooded in that particular area. Seeing the chickens was kind of funny, but at the sametime really sad. :( Hope the feds help these people out, big time!

Just saw this post. I am also near Houston. My house is in Sugarland, and we can't get back to our home with all the road closures. We had to evacuate to our farm with our livestock. I am thankful it wasn't the other way around!!
Anyway thought and prayers are with you all. Our house is very, very close to the Brazos river, and interestingly enough our farm is close to the Colorado river!
Either way we are stuck next to a potential disaster area.
Long story short, the rain is wrecking havoc on my flock. With so much rain, the ground is so saturated it just stays wet and stinky. This couldn't be good for the chickens. I am seeing many stressed chickens who are not laying hardly at all. I have started letting them out to roam to get them out of the nasty coop.
Poor things! I worry that with this wet ground diseases will become a issue.
