Everything is hour drive for y'all, that would make me nuts. I am really spoiled!
We have a small town grocery about 15 miles from the house and a walmart about 20 miles out. If they don't carry it, you have to drive a ways. The Mexican store is only about 35 miles away but all back woods country roads. If they don't have it, Nashville is 53 miles away.

That's one of the reasons why it is so hard for most people to leave New Orleans, it has always been such a combination of the two. Plus we really do have a strange culture of our own.

I think that's what most people really want, some understanding of what it feels like to lose everything you have worked your whole life for and that someone cares. And the ability to do what is needed to rebuild for yourself and your neighbor, so life can go on. Material prices to remain at a normal cost, to not feel preyed upon, but prayed for.
I agree. I lost everything in Hurricane Ivan. I had plenty of scammers waiting around to take my money - what little of it I had. My insurance did not want to pay enough to help me out, so I had to hire a public adjuster. I ended up getting what I needed and was able to rebuild. However, it was a valuable lesson learned. If you compared the Governor of Puerto Rico with the mayor of San Juan, you can see the difference in attitude. That's what I'm referring to. Hurricane Maria is not the first hurricane to hit Puerto Rico. I believe much of the problem is as my students have indicated - years of corruption and pocketing of funds intended to keep the infrastructure in good repair has resulted in the mess you see in Maria's aftermath. Many are innocent of these crimes, but I think those responsible should be tracked down and punished accordingly. People lost their lives in PR due to poor preparation and maintenance of vital services.

I'm not heartless, and I do understand the need for support after an event like this. I've been through it myself. But, I'll be curious to see if the people in charge in the country learn anything from this at all.

DH has started to read over my shoulder, because I was laughing so much in front of the computer. Now he is LHAO as well! It has become a family activity to read BYC together!
Still catching up....but had to say I agree with this!
I showed Mr. Chef Kiki's and rjohns39 anniversary greetings and he was very touched. I frequently catch him lurking about trying to read over my shoulder.
