Yes, a lot of that was suburban, or what we call here "new" houses. LOL
The vast majority of New Orleans was affected, slab and raised houses, both, due to levee failure, we were unable to pump the water out (it just came right back into the city). Levees had to be repaired first in order to pump the water out. Very few areas of the city were dry. Hospitals with no power and 1st floors under water were being air evacted out 5 days after Katrina hit. Someone on this thread, (I think Aart), said it best. If you have not been through it you just can't imagine what it's like. Totally surreal and hard to wrap your head around, even though you are living it. That's why my heart truely goes out to southeast Texas, you can't discribe it. You just have to band together and hold eachother up, push forward and not give up. Some days that can be very hard to do when you are in the middle of it. It can feel like it will never end. Even people who were properly insured lost stupid amounts of money. One of the reasons the city is having on going troubles still. Population is lower, still, 12 years later. It is a long, hard row to hoe. But if you love your city Texans, it will be worth it all.

Excellent Idea!!!
I have one source that gives me cases of water that have reached their "sale by date". I put it in the barn, too! I even fill 2 liter soda bottles. You can never ever have enough water if your supply becomes damaged, or even worse, non-existant.
One other thing we have here is access to several mountain springs. Some have even been fitted with a pipe and some even have spigots. My sister also has a spring they use daily as does her mother in law. Most are within a couple of miles. Berkeley Springs, WV also has spring water access and many people get all of their drinking water from there - even if they don't actually "need to".

this is a good idea. there is a stream that comes off a mountain about 30 mins from me that people take water from. the bad thing is that it is on the side of a high way. depending on the storm they say some parts of the island will be months without electric. my fiance says the last time that happened they had no water so maybe we can get some from the stream if we end up having to.

right now we have a lot of rain and thunder already. we just need to finish bringing things inside and collect as much water as we can.

hopefully this moves away from us but this storm is moving so slow right now so who knows.

Fill your bathtub as well.

Oh, lilmarie84, so sorry you are leaving the greater New Orleans area. Know you will probably enjoy country living in MS, hope you all have found a great place where you will be able to find a lovely, peaceful place for your family. Good luck with your new endeavor.

I know I am going to miss this place I have lived here all my life but its not its like what it use to be anymore and that is one of the reasons we are moving and the hubby and I have have talking bout the country life for a while now I want to get away from the city life and he wants to go back to his country boy roots and living off the landbut I am going to miss this place alot tho

I've been watching this thread but haven't commented as what can I really say...there has been no hurricane that has hit our little state with as much devastation as for Texas and LA. We were spared the rath of Sandy even though we sit right under NJ. Just wanted to let all know that some animals from TX are making their way up the East Coast here for adoption. There was a big adoption this past weekend in Chester County PA. My office mate had a daughter working the event and many of the animals were placed. Apparently these are all untagged cats and dogs though.

Fill your bathtub as well.
Water from your bathtub can also be used to flush your toilet if necessary. Most tubs hold lots of water, so this is a great hurricane tip. From a clean tub water can also be filtered for drinking, if it comes to that. A 1 gallon bucket of water will flush most toilets when they have to be flushed.
