Yes, it is on my list of things to look up today. And I want to see what they say as to how the Volcanoes affect the ice.

I think it was an episode of the BBC documentary series "Frozen Planet" that I watched a few weeks ago (definitely remember David Attenborough narration, anyway); it included an exploration of an active volcano in Antarctica, Mount Erebus. Fascinating stuff, indeed.

Here's an interesting image showing how the eye wall replacement cycle happens

It seems the eyewall replacement cycle happens with most high intensity hurricanes. It even weakens them for a short time until the outer eyewall replaces the old inner eyewall and then the hurricane can re-intensify.

Good morning! I read (again the reading!) several articles this morning about the Ring of Fire volcanoes including the 91 newly discovered ones under the Antarctica.

The Ring of Fire has over 450 volcanoes ( I didn't look to see if this included the 138 now known ones in Antarctica). However, this is supposed to comprise 75% of the world's known volcanoes.

I came away from it with the distinct impression that the melting of the ice from volcanic eruptions is eerily related to the age old questions of "What came first, the chicken or the egg?. Did the volcanoes erupt because of the ice melting first, thus relieving pressure and causing the volcanoes to erupt? Or did the heat from the eruptions cause the melting of the ice?

In any case, the one interesting statement was that the heat generated by the volcanoes was almost the same as the heat generated by the sun on the earth.
