Hurricane Advice

Yuck! I hate possums! I think I have one getting into my chicken tractor in the late afternoon, early evening. The chickens go to roost in the other coop and in the rafters of the barn, so something is getting the eggs then. They are usually all broken and some of the yolks eaten, but not all. It's a real mess. The eggs in the big coop aren't touched. I can't collect until around 10 or so in the evening on the days I work late. I do try to collect as many as I can before leaving, but it's not always possible if there are several hens in line to lay :). If I get them early enough, I don't usually have the problem. DH says he's going to put our game camera out there to see what's doing it and plan accordingly. This means deciding which weapon he's going to use to dispatch the thief :).

Back at work today after eating too much this weekend!

I have a hen that lays her eggs by the pop door of the new coop others are following suit now one was broke there last night but not eaten?

I found one on the roadside in front of our house earlier this year. It was a doe, obviously hit by something traveling pretty fast. I had to call around, but finally got the folks that our county contracts with to pick up the roadkill. I've narrowly missed others driving home from work at night. They are also on our property, and often in our driveway when I come home.
Oh Lord! @rjohns39 hope you don't end up with a "yearling" situation. Just don't name him Flag.

Just the other side of my mountain are two big bucks that wander their area with bright red collars. The locals have put out the word to all hunters that they are off limits...

My friend's wife rescued them when they were days old, both had mom's who got hit by a car/truck. She nursed them with goats milk (can't recall the actual name, but new milk) and raised them until they were ready to move on. Each year they'd return and she'd change/adjust their collar. I've watched them (six and eight points) eat out of her hand and drink crown out of my friends glass.:gig

My friend has since moved and the new owners of their house dutifully toss corn out when they show up, but is not interested in getting any closer than the deck.

I haven't heard of deer being euthanized due to being tamed, but I have seen several black bears here trapped and euthanized because people feed them, so they lose their fear of humans and get into dumpsters in apartment complexes and such. People don't realize how dangerous they can be. Deer - not so much. Bears? No thanks.

There have been a lot of cases across the country where they take that approach for all sorts of "wild" animals. And there have been cases where domestic farm animals have been "declared feral" and destroyed.

I belonged to a deer club years back and we had a large buck that we all had to be aware of because he would charge humans. LOL Talk about not wanting to get the horns! In this case you had to avoid the antlers! LOL People have lost common sense in the last few decades. I am sure this buck contributed to some lovely fawns on the property. Why remove an animal that contributes to keeping wonderful beauty and good healthy food on the property. :jumpy

That buck is now in my back yard. I told the story awhile back...well...he's back again. It was almost dark out when I heard the snorting this evening while I was collecting eggs (Rupert was safely inside). I made the mistake of moving towards him (not realizing it was him) and then I heard the hoof stomp. I "hoofed" it back into the house.
