Hurricane Irene - Watch out East Coast

They updated our forecast and were in for 6+ inches of rain and 70mph winds. This is not going to be fun. I hope no trees fall on the pens.

I have a massive basket oak tree (it has 5 large trunks) not 6 ft from the back part of my house. I hope that sucker hangs in there, otherwise if any of it falls................goodbye house.

I'm 5 miles from the ocean, we should be OK with that, it's the wind I'm worried about.

We are about in the same boat. My hubby will be pulling a 12 hour shift, though, as a Paramedic. If the winds get over 30 mph, they will not allow them to take calls. They will also not allow them to leave the building to go home until the winds are under 30 mph. So, it will be me and the dog plus all the critters to ride out the storm.

I'll be thinking about you and him. Camp LeJeune is a lot closer to the "danger zone" than we are.

My husband has said that the Fire Depts here are already prepared to come help down there if needed.
I think most of them have already been assigned an area to go to if it's bad.
HERE being the Piedmont area.

I'm used to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, but only went through one hurricane- Hurricane Bob in 1991. It was a Cat 3 when it hit where I was, and I was a foolish 20 year old who decided I'd go ahead and drive home to Kansas anyway...

My windshield wipers flew off and my car filled up from the rain forcing its way in through my sunroof and windows. I crawled home through DC at 5mph. It was ridiculous, and I can't imagine allowing my chickens to stay out in a coop unless it was made of railroad ties and lag bolts, with a steel frame embedded in concrete. Forget it. My house might have chickens and poop temporarily, but I would have a guilt-free conscience!!

Hoping for the best for all of you in the target range.

Awesome! Hopefully we won't need them, but it's good to know they are available if we do!

Also, we are about a hour drive inland from Wilmington. Right now it's breezy with broken cloud bands. No rain for us, but I've heard it's raining in Wilmington already. The actually hurricane is due to be here tomorrow morning at last report, but we will be windy and rainy tonight as well.
