HURRICANE MARIA / BE PREPARED / BE SMART

I u buy generator take some advice from one who uses his many times a year, please. 4 or 5 K is enough power for most unless u have extra power needs 5 K can provide power for basic needs for 2 houses [fridge & lights microwave ect. diesel is better than gasoline as diesel will store for years & gasoline is only good for about 6 mo. GET THE ELETRIC START ONE!!! well worth the extra cost & anyone can start it [ including kids & injured people {god forbid} ]. also get 2-5gal storage cans for fuel & 2-3 cans of ether for quick starting. u may be in the dark & the rain when u need to start it. put it up on blocks [ wood or cinder blocks ok ] & build a little roof for it [ just a flat board w/ 4 legs u can set over it w/ about 4'' clearance. ] keeps it clean around the fuel filler cap ect. U ALSO NEED A COUPLE OF 100' EXTENSION CORDS 1 never leaves it's side & keep the other one handy. get one that has 4- 110-120vac & one 220-24-vac outlets [ this is usually standard but if u have a well u need 220. all should have 12vdc all ready also get a couple of ground fault / surge protected multi strips w/[ mine have 6 places to plug in ] [don't get the cheap ones at wallyworld get the ones contractors use weather proof heavy duty u'll be glad u did]. [I learned the hard way] if u decide to go w/ ' generac' make sure ur fuel source is secure! most are natural gas & supply can be lost in bad times. if u have propane or butane tank that will work & the nice thing about ;;GENERAC'' is they install & the system is automatic!!! i'm savin' up for one even though I have a small solar system & 2 gens. [I elec, start 1 not,--guess which one I use--lol ]also get spare batt for it [ 12 vdc 7 amp hour motorcycle batt. works good & not so $$$. ] once u get mark a day on ur calender each month & go run it for 15 min EVERY MONTH -I almost forgot-- get a couple quarts of oil for it too & keep all gen stuff together in one place! maybe its own little shed. if u put gen in shed make sure u vent the exhaust!! but make sure u can find everything in the dark in a storm w/ a hurt arm. if u don't have a ''hot plate'' [ induction burner] or such u may need one to cook with some things cant be cooked in microwave. I probably left out what u wanted to know, so post it here & i'll find the answer. GBA
Sounds like good advice. We have a wood stove we can cook on. I keep trying to push for a gas stove. I hate electric ones. We also need an alternate water source. Our pump is wired into the house. We have a river but the water is generally cloudy, would need filtered and boiled. I am thinking of hand digging a well and putting a manual pump on it. We are also having gutters put on the house, and hooking a water barrel up to it. Pays to prepare.

AT THIS POINT MY UNCLES CONTACTS w/ the hurricane hunters SAY THAT IF opps sry maria hits usa it will be around virginis -dc area or north & will just brush not really hit get well quick & start putting it back together. GBA
