Hurricane Preparation

Tyler,
I too am in Orlando and prepping for first hurricane with my flock of 9 20-week old hens & 1 roo! I have a mobile coop that I built so we rolled it into 1/2 of our 12'x16' pole barn/shed that has already survived 4 hurricanes with no damage. Since the shed has a dirt floor and we are already pretty soggy from non-stop rains over the past weeks, I put down about 3-4 inches of pine shavings to give them a drier walking surface. My flock is a bit confused and fidgety, but I gave them extra snacks (mealworms/veggies) to distract them. I will not close the big door on the shed until Sunday when the heavy rain/wind moves in so they aren't in the dark any longer then necessary for safety.

My neighbors have a flock of silkies which they moved into their garage, but I only have a carport, so shed was most secure place I have.

I'm sure we will be okay, latest track further west will reduce the winds in our area, which is good. Let us know how you are after Irma passes.
Debbie

Yeah we are just gonna keep our nine chickens in the coop for now. We have screen on the sides that goes underground, and some 4x4 posts that are a few feet in the ground as well, so I'm pretty confident that it will not blow over, unless a tornado happens to spawn right on top of the coop (unlikely). Hope y'all stay safe. I'll be posting pictures as to how bad it gets here.

DEBBIE, it might be a good idea to lock the barn down now this storm is wider then fla. & winds will be up soon . worried bout light hang an led lantern or flashlite those last several hours & birds sleep in dark so might be calmer ??? not sure as I haven't really heard many stories 'bout how people brought their live stock through such storms maybe yall can write a book so folks will know next time. ya'll let us know how u r long as u have power, please. w/ luck that won't happen stay safe Tyler & Debbie & all u nice folks, GBA

We don't have power right now, but we got through it ok. To be honest, I was out of state during Charley, and was very young when I did so. This was my first hurricane so I didn't know what to expect. It was one of the scariest storms I have ever seen, and both my parents said that it might have been worse than Charley. We had 3 tornadoes go over our house, and caused a tree to uproot and fall on our house. We had to bail water out for the whole night. Surprisingly, the chicken coop was completely in tact, and all nine chickens were ok. I have never been so happy to hear the rooster crow in the morning. We probably wont have power for the next few weeks. The moral of the story is to be prepared.
