hurt leg!

OH AND TRY BLUE COAT I BELIEVE ITS CALLED. I KNOW TRACTOR SUPPLY CARRIES IT. WE HAVE USED IT ON WOUNDS FOR OUR DOGS BEFORE. BUT EVEN CHEAPER WAY IF IT IS A SCRATCH TRYING TO GET INFECTED IS TO USE NEOSPORIN. WE HAD A BABY CHICK ATTACKED BY A HAWK WHO EXPOSED HER SPINE. MY HUSBAND THOUGHT SHE WOULD DIE AND I SAID NOT ON MY WATCH. I CLEANED HER OUT WITH WATER AND THEN NEOSPORIN FOR A FEW DAYS. WITHIN THE WEEK, MINUS THE SCABS THAT FORMED YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN SHE WAS STTACKED. SHE WAS ON OF MY BEST LAYERS AFTER THAT TOO.

Have you tried giving her aspirin? It's possible she jumped off something and landed wrong or any other number of things - an awkward slip - etc.

Soaking in warm Epsom salt bath might help too.

If she gets better after some aspirin, then it's probably a pulled something or other.
Do you know what the dosage is? I thought about the aspirin but am not sure on the dosage. I would like to try that. I also thought about an Epsom salt soak too and am going to try that as well

I ONLY GAVE HER LIKE NOT EVEN A 1/4 OF A PILL. I CRUSHED IT UP AND PUT IT IN SOME COTTAGE CHEESE TO GET HER TO TAKE IT. I TRIED THE WATER AT FIRST BUT IT DIDNT WORK. I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON HER WEIGHT. I WOULDNT RECOMMEND TOO MUCH THOUGH. I BELIEVE ITS LIKE 25MG TO 1 LB SO BASICALLY A 3 POUNDER CAN HAVE A FULL BABY ASPIRIN. SOME PEOPLE CRUSH IT UP IN WATER AND SYRINGE IT TO THEM. ITS BASICALLY ALL IN HOW YOU CAN GET HER TO TAKE IT.

Yes- 25mg per pound of bird if you can give her aspirin directly. It's easiest to start with the "low-dose" aspirin tablets (81mg- roughly enough for a 3lb bird)-- the regular aspirin tablets are 325mg, so you either have to be good at "eyeing" it or have a hyper sensitive scale. If there's a treat she usually gets you can try giving it to her that way - or if you have a syringe (or a CLEAN eyedropper) - you can slowly give it to her that way.

Now- somewhere on here there are conversions for diluting aspirin in water that take into account about how much she will drink and gives a per quart dose- how much to mix into her water supply so she gets enough of the aspirin.

Usually I medicate directly so I know they got what I needed them to get- and when.

I AGREE ITS EASIER TO GAUGE HOW MUCH SHE IS INTAKING. MINE THOUGH WHERE LITTLE BOOGERS AND HAD TO DO IT CRUSHED AND MIXED IN A TREAT FOR FOOD. THEY LOVED COTTAGE CHEESE SO IT WAS MY GO TO.

Exactly- anytime I put something in the water they turn up their noses. Tube feeding comes in handy when medicating - quick tube to the crop and the medication is there, mixed with water. Syringes and eyedroppers work too. I usually add in some molasses or something else sweet if I'm trying to medicate orally (as in, the bird swallows it herself).

Here are pics of her leg from this morning. I’m going to bathe her later as she has a lot of poop on her and do an Epsom salt Soak, I can give meds in the mouth so I will do that as well with aspirin if aspirin doesn’t help I’m going to try and see if a vet will help me out some

How old is your lame bird? If she is under a year old, it is highly likely that Marek's is the cause, especially if there is no obvious injury or swelling. Much of what you read about Marek's is the severe cases because those are the ones that are diagnosed via necropsy but milder cases do occur and birds can completely and somewhat miraculously recover from them to the extent that I would even suggest the 3 that @KinnaChickie treated may well have been suffering from Marek's and not the mild fractures or dislocation that was suggested. I believe this because I have Marek's in my flock (diagnosed via necropsy) and I have seen similar recoveries in young birds with Marek's lameness. I would offer supportive care and a poultry vitamin supplement like Poultry Cell or at the least a vitamin B complex supplement as this supports the neurological system. Your bird may also benefit from being placed in a chicken sling or hammock to keep her in an upright position and help prevent her from getting to soiled. They can be made very simply from everyday items... see below

Food and water pots can be clipped to the front of the box within reach of the bird. The fabric should be adjusted so that the bird's feet are able to touch the bottom but their weight is supported. Time out of the sling is important too to encourage a little movement.

Aspirin comes in grains. Chickens can have one whole baby aspirin twice a day. That's a total of 162 grains per day. But you don't need to measure if you're using baby 81 grain aspirin.

My lame eight-year old hen gets a baby aspirin and vitamin B complex tab every day and it helps reduce her pain so she can get around.

I will try the sling for her. I just don’t think it’s mareks because it’s just one leg the other is perfectly fine and everything else about her is 100% fine. She’s 1.5 years old
