Yes he is. Can't say I wanted/needed 13 more chicks and 13 ducklings, but what can I say. I knew better than to let him go on his own to the store with only his baby girls. By now he knows I'm not really going to mind more birds.
Sad part? DH is the master coop builder here. I say a nice 10 x 10 coop for the banties. He builds them this 16' x 24' banty heaven coop. We've had this discussion before. If he builds to the size I vote for, we don't have room for more. If he builds to his size, we have a coop with room for twice as many.
My DH is doing the same thing! I asked for a coop to hold 15 chickens. Well, that's what we started with. Then he got the "building bug" and tripled the size of the coop (which is not finished yet, BTW)
He said I needed room for expansion. Then he expressed an interest in getting a Welsummer Roo: "the consumate rooster" in his eyes! And maybe a few BCM's to boot!
lol We recently found out we are moving down the road to a place with a nice chicken house, and I've been chicken shopping. LOL Finally placed an order this am, didn't get to use Mc murray as they were out of everything till the end of May, so I used Cackle, hope they're good! But I eneded up ordering, 5 Buff Orphingtons, 5 Barred Rocks, 5 Rhode Island Red, 5 Cherry Eggers, and 5 Easter Egger pullets and 2 Easter Egger cockrels. I was set on using the McMurray and when I foudn out they were out of everything (after having it for the dates I wanted, just yesterday morning), I told hubs that I coudlnt' get my EE or Red Stars cause theyw ere out and had about half decided that I'd just ask the feed store to order the EE's and hope for the best on them being pullets, and he did ask, well jsut HOW many are we getting?? LOL I ordered a bit more than I'd liek to have but I figured you have to factor in the dead loss or whatnot, and I'd hate to get one or two of a breed and then loose them. LOL Plust he extra eggs will be ok for selling I'm thinking. Seems though I've seriously jumped in with both feet. ha ha
I am starting off with 8: a straight run of EE. I already have a list of other breeds that I want. I think DH is building a coop for 15. Maybe I need to brush up on my chicken math skills!
LOL, my husband thinks I'm crazy for wanting more chickens and ducks. Yet he gave me permission to buy an incubator today!!
Now the fun begins.
I am setting duck eggs this weekend and then placing a big order for chicks and turkeys from the local co-op. Haha, I can't wait to hear what everyone will say when they find out I'm getting turkeys too!! lol
Went to the feed store, got 6. I thought the cage looked too small for them and they looked loney so I went back and got 6 of a different breed. So now that is 12. One died. They will only sell them in quantities of 6 so I told them 2 had died becuase there were only two cute tiny white little bantams in a huge tub of brown ones so they gave me two since my chicks were only bought a couple days prior. So now I'm up to 13. Well after joining this group today I saw that someone had ducks and chickens together so when the kids come home from school I wont be able to explain how 2 ducks got in the cage or how we ended up with more baby chicks....lol
My husband would have a whole farm if our land was big enough, we are on 3 acres that back to 15 so chickens it is. I just keep telling him "what if they are all roosters?" and "what if some more die?"
We started with basic EEs. World's dumbest birds. Dumb as rocks, only that's an insult to rocks. Plus the roo was EVIL as sin. However, since I felt no shame/guilt at all about sending him to freezer camp, it's made that easier for every other bird who needs to visit.
So we wanted nice, sane birds. So couldn't decide between the Jersey Giants or the Orphs. So we got both. Then oh, the baby BRs were soooo adorable. Then the oldest daughter got into 4-H and wanted ducks. So we got ducks. Then we got into raising meat birds because it wasn't the end of the world to send birds to freezer camp.
Then guineas.
Then the Lorps because aww cute.... And Cochin for the same reason. Then the bantam Cochins and the peafowl and the geese and now the new chickies....
As DH points out, he'd rather raise meat chickens than raise cattle. Chickens are cheaper and easier to raise in his mind. So we have chickens running around now, life is fun
which story should I use when she finds out? (which she wont until they are out of the brooder and in the coop)
A) one of the hens must have went broody and hid the chicks from us until now.
B) deny that i baught them and some one just dropped them off.
C) RUNNNN!
D) Blame my Dad for driving me there and giving me $$$!
E) tell my mom she's seeing things?
