Hutch the Halfie **The Last Chapter on Pg. 18**

I went to Camelot tonight and just got back a short while ago. There were some beautiful horses going for dirt cheap tonight. I'm guessing that's how it's been for awhile though. A gorgeous paso fino went through and sold for $500. I would have scooped that boy up for myself if I was in the position to do so! There were a few other horses that went for $250 or $300 who would have made nice little project horses. There was also a cute little fjord who was short, but I fell in love with her too. She rode and drove. She went for $1100 I think.

Didn't seem like there were too many horses there this week. Most were actually papered and many of them were beautifully colored. Very few grade horses! Years ago I remember tons of grade QHs and thoroughbreds going through. There were maybe two TBs that went through while I was there. There were actually a lot of gaited horses though.

Definitely an interesting crowd over there! At times I thought people were going to go all out and brawl! LOL That was more fun to watch than the horses sometimes.

I'm glad your two horses found good homes though! Looked like a lot of traders bidding tonight. That can be a tough life for a horse!

I heard about the Fjord mare. The gal that heads the rescue was bidding in her for herself... I doubt she went that high though. WOW...must've been one heck of a horse.

Here's who's available... another halfie

That's so weird to look at those pictures because a lot of them I saw going through and I actually remember seeing them!

Most of those horses were not beginner horses at all. There was maybe one or two that would have made a nice little riding horse, but the rest either bucked, threw their heads, or were just spooky and afraid. The calmer horses were definitely the ones going for more money. I was wondering who the bidder was buying up all these horses! It must have been the meat guy I guess!

Hutch was the very best kid's pony I have ever been around. The littlest of kids could hang all over him. I saw over and over how gentle he was with every child that visited the farm. He grew healthier with each passing month though, when all the horses tore off across the pasture, his tired trot reminded us of his age. I knew we wouldn't have him for ever but, I wasn't prepared for this.

I walked around the pasture on Saturday morning and saw him caught under the gate. It was just his head.. and he was angled downhill so his body was forcing him in the position. I couldn't open the gate so I ran and grabbed my husband who quickly mustered the power to remove it. I thought he would just pop up but, he didn't. He had been flailing for some time and had worked himself into a lather which turned the ground into a mud puddle.

We called a friend who had banamine and we grabbed the neighbors and kept trying to get him up but his legs were like jello. We then called the vet who gave us great hope. We gave him electrolytes, water and he would even take a bite of hay in between attempts to get him up. We let him rest and flipped his body over to reduce pressure on each side... and eventually got him to sit up while leaning on hay bales. Then, he finally arose! We were so happy but, his legs were so wobbly. It took 6 people to help support him and we tried repeatedly to walk him around.. but, he kept collapsing..

We let him rest the night and flipped him over a few times before bed at midnight. He was comfortable and relaxing with another banamine shot. When I got up at 5, he was much much worse and I could tell his mind was going too.. so maybe the electrical storm the night before touched the metal fencing which got to him .. or he was suffering from some neurological damage from flailing under that gate...or something must have caused him to fall ill to get under that gate to begin with.. there was no grass on the other side to reach for.. ahh... anyway, it has been hard but, I am so happy we jumped in and took him in.

All a horse wants is grass, a field to run, someone to love him and horsey friends to herd with.. and he had all of that. He was at home here and died knowing all of us loved him. The vet came right over in the morning and Wyatt wouldn't leave his side. He held Hutchie right up to the very end

by the way, the vet did say that Hutchie was definitely not 13.. which we figured out along the way but, that he was probably older than 23. What a good old boy. We will look again this Spring for another over the hill pony no one loves anymore... as long as it has a good heart and is honest.. what a find.

Oh Erin, this breaks my heart. I am so sorry. I'm glad I got to see him at the swap you had on the farm, he was so sweet.
