Erin, he is just beautiful! And I love love love that picture. You go girl!! So glad Hutch has some pasture-mates. He'll be so much happier with a few friends. It sounds like he's really settling in and getting comfortable. Oh, and I picked up my new boy today. I'll get you some pics as soon as I take some. He's a beauty, and I'm totally in love with him! ; )

I know that feeling.

As for horses ending up at auction, unfortunately, right now the horse market is really down. I know people who were giving away horses because they could no longer feed them and had trouble finding them a home. I've heard of people finding horses in their pasture, or tied to their trailer when they come back from a trail ride, or even if they've gone to an auction. For some people, it's a last resort. They cannot care for the horse any longer. They cannot find a home for the horse either by giving it away, or trying to sell it. They can't afford even, to put the horse down. That's money that would pay for rent or groceries, or even their own doctor's bill. So they basically have no other option left to them. And many that are close enough to go to Camelot will choose Camelot over New Holland. Reason? They know there's a whole group of people that try their hardest to find homes for all of the horses there, so they figure at least the horse has a fighting chance.

Deb, I just discovered the Camelot Horse Weekly page and have been in awe of the 4,000 + people (women)

on there who network, cross post, fundraise and go bananas for 3 days to find these horses homes. ..EVERY WEEK and they've been able to get every single horse out for many weeks running. The problem is, here in the mid-atlantic, we've had such a dry summer that hay production is probably less than half of the norm. That's gonna drive up the price. People are aware of how tough and expensive it's going to be to winter these horses. By November and December we're likely to see double the amount of horses in the feedlots. If you guys know of anyone looking for a decent horse, please send them the link. I think AC4H (another chance for horses) is doing their efforts for New Holland. I saw a GORGEOUS belgian on there that was just a spectacular speciman. He can ride and drive. He was $900 because they charge by the pound. He was 2,000 lbs! I don't know if he's still on there but, that kind of draft is still worth 2-3 grand where I live. Even if you can winter them fairly cheaply and try and sell in the Spring... maybe it's a thought?

I had mine shipped from Camelot to western Maryland and it was 150 via professional transport and gas money for the other via another gal who was scooping a gelding. So, you can save money by networking and finding someone who's in your area already doing the trip. Many New Englanders adopt from there. CT, ME, NY, VT . The girl that brought mine for gas money and tolls was from Roanoke, VA. So.... you don't have to be close.

Every week, I plan to post craigslist ads with a link to the feedlot. I get a couple hits each time. If you guys could post some too... that could help. There are many ways to get horses sold without actually buying them yourself. I even fundraised for mine and just paid the transport. I am making payments on 379 but 359 wound up free and another gelding I was able to bail through fundraising was a gray arabian (449) that I placed with Arabian Rescue Mission (ARM). Around Christmas time, folks are always looking for something generous to do. Maybe take this info in to your work and start now collecting. Then, just donate the horses to the rescues after you call Frank and bail them. They also need the money for horses, quarantine, hay and feed, vet, etc.

I have a friend that forwards the list to everyone we know. That's how my boss ended up w/the 2 from Camelot that she has. And, they're both really nice horses. I had to do a bunch of work w/the one to get him to stand quietly in cross ties, but he's turned into a real love.

I think I might head to Camelot auction next wednesday. I looked it up and it is only about an hour and a half from where I live right now. It has been ages since I've been there!

Does anyone know what time the actual auction is? I read somewhere that tack starts at 8pm and horses at 9pm. That just seems very late to me. Does anyone know for sure? I'm having a difficult time looking it up online.

Hey Chickerdoodle, the sale does run late, I believe. I think it isn't over til around midnight so... 9 might be right. They have an police trained 17 hand hunk of handsome on there for $600. He'd be mine if I didn't have my hands full. Im sure he'll go.
