Hutch the Halfie **The Last Chapter on Pg. 18**

UPDATE: Hutch, the halfie is doing great! We released him and his pasture mate (a quarter horse colt being boarded here in return for farmwork) into the field. They have eaten up the corall and were ready for the open field! The colt is very laid back... probably almost 2 and was malnourished ..much more than Hutch. It is just everywhere around here.

We have been working them up to longer, more frequent grazing periods and I THINK (SO DOES MY VET) that they are ready to be horses. I didn't mention the QH to y'all before as I was taking such a hit on here... but, he's here and doing fine. And, Im to the point where Im just going to let it all hang. Oh, BTW...

I also bought two horses from a kill pen at Camelot Auction http://nj-feedlot-horse-rescue.com/availablecamelot.html last weekend. I've been looking for something for me and just thought I'd give this way a shot. I know I may not find my dream horse like this but, I can always rehome them if they do not work out. The point was getting them from where they were. If they do work out, that's a bonus. I bought 359 and 379. 379 is an appendix qh, I believe. He is said to be a calm, lesson horse... 15.3 hands and app. 10 years. He is such a gentleman. He arrived on the farm midday Saturday and got off the trailer like a pro and was so gentle with me as I walked him around before putting him in his stall. He looked at everything!! but, didn't spook. 359 is supposed to be a camp horse app. 12 yrs. old and 15 hands. She is a priss! She arrived Saturday night... almost midnight and the transporter mentioned how calm she was throughout the entire ordeal. The horse have been through a lot and he could tell she's a "been there done that" and would probably make someone a nice horse....

She was a doll that night but, the next day turned into Queen Sheba and we are all her servants. She's very bossy and puts her ears back when you look at her. I've been working on her coming to me for a treat and she is responsive to food. When she's hooked up, she leads well but will pull a lot when grazing. Off the lead, she is impossible to catch unless you have a bucket. I leaned on her back while Rus was holding her and she bolted a bit and put her ears back

I have a friend who shows a good deal and she said she'd be happy to come and work with her and take big boy for a test drive

Here's my boy

what do you guys think? appendix qh?

don't have any pics of Sheba yet... except for the one on the camelot page. I've been busy busy... will try later. Of course she rolled around in the paddock and is now a mess

I do have them quarantined the best I can. I have a corall with a run-in. The girl who keeps her QH here is well aware of the chance we are taking and are keeping a close eye on everyone. Both horses arrived in excellent health and the rescues who attended the auction said no sickies went though this week... I understand things can still pop up. We are watching them. Geez... Im already prepared for the onslaught

Very nice, I'm betting their glad to have a good home. I would get your friend to work on the bossy one and knock her down from her thrown, hehe. If you have satellite TV look for RFDTV as they have some good horse training shows on there....

The barn where I work has 2 horses that were bought from Camelot this year. Glad to see some more saved from there. I know there's a whole group of people that try their hardest to get all of the horses homes.

My first mare was out of camelot and she WAS my dream horse! I fell in love with that mare and used her for all sorts of activities. She needed a lot of work when we bought her, but we got along real well.

The gelding looks really pretty! I hope he turns out to be a good riding horse for you. That's a good idea to have someone really experienced get on him first though.

As for the bossy mare, get her in a round pen if you can! That'll knock a lot of the nastiness out of her fairly quickly (Not saying to just throw her in the round pen and go at training, but get books and watch shows about the techniques. If you can find a trainer to help you, even better!) Sounds like she just needs to be put into her place. Just be careful though, because occasionally bossy horses will always looked for a chance to get on top. Just be sure to always keep an eye on her while you're working!

Sounds like it's exciting with all the new guys you have! Hopefully they all work out!

Yay! You went and did what we were talking about. Bought slightly over per pound price. Whoo Hoo.

Now, one more time: CORRAL

I even thought about it and thought I was correcting myself!!! must be that brain damage again.

I groomed all 3 this evening. Pony mare was great. She has a little thrush on her front frogs so, Im keeping her dry and getting the thrush brush from TSC. She was sweet and well-mannered.

She is a real looker... looks almost like a percheron cross of some sort... baby got some back

Hutch is so full of himself. He is getting more proud by the day. .. so awesome to watch. He's also prancing a bit in front of that mare.

My man did awesome! He is a picture of health and a real gentleman. Im a spontaneous girl and know the smart thing to do would be to wait for Kaylee to get over here and try him out BUT
cool.png

He was doing so darned good. I had Rus hold him near the fence and I climbed up and rubbed his back... nothing. I laid on him... nothing
hide.gif
I slid my leg on him... nothing
hu.gif
I eased myself on ready to bail at a moments notice... AND.... nothing
ya.gif
Rus walked us around the hay field and he did FABULOUS!!

I am so in love. I know this doesn't mean he may not have issues that an experienced rider can learn but, it does mean he's sane. Rus let go of his halter and he just followed him along. I relaxed right away when he lowered his head and did the QH walk.

These posts have made me so happy -- thank you for sharing -- over the years we have taken in older horses from the 'kill-pen' and let them live out their lives here -- nothing could be more rewarding --

just got the most amazing news concerning the appendix gelding
big_smile.png
Lori, the transporter, just called. She wanted to give me a little more info on him. She had to call in about paperwork concerning one of the other horses or something.. . I cannot remember cause my info was so incredible, I forgot
lol.png
Anyway, the lady that works at the auction house wanted her to pass along the info to me. Apparently, someone with some company came in there looking for a theraputic horse and did some sort of stress test on quite a few of the horses. They rode them backward, standed on their back and did all kinds of crazy things with them. 2 horses passed.. and he was one of them. They were headed to the bank to come and scoop him when I called in with his bail. She (auction lady) even said she hadn't had a personal horse in a long time and was seriously considering him.
wee.gif
Im still having the friend take him for his test drive but, I am now feeling sky high about the whole situation.

When this horse got off the trailer, I cried. I couldn't believe how beautiful and sweet he looked. I just bawled. My husband couldn't stop laughing at me. It really was love at first sight. Im going to show you another pic I took that I didn't want to post because it was that cheezy but, I think it will help you understand exactly how I felt

Don't laugh

so glad to hear about other happy auction endings. I cannot believe horses like this would be considered useless enough for meat. I am against horse slaughter just because of how cruel the entire process is... I think I could understand if the horse were ill or unruly or somehow had no other options but, a beautiful animal like these two? Imagine all the wonderful school horses and trail horses and ex racehorses and buggy horses and child's ponies that no one happened to bid on that day...
