Hutch the Halfie **The Last Chapter on Pg. 18**

Oh Erin, it's absolutely a dream. I cannot wait to come over and check it out. I will have to do it soon as I know Rusty will have made all kinds of renovations in no time flat! Be sure to keep an album of before and after.

I am soo jealous and extremely happy for you and the guys!

ETA: Sandy and I can share a room. I doubt my snoring will be a problem and the dogs will sleep on the bed with me to help keep me warm!

We restored much of it when I was in high school. There was writing in the chinking in between the logs that read, "Dorsey 1848" Im assuming it was their home. The original room pictured below (excuse my mess) was the original log cabin. This is the front right room on the bottom floor. Then the bottom left room was built and they were connected by a breeze way which later became the stairway and foyer.

and this room was the "summer kitchen" ...now our dining room in the addition. The second floor was added sometime before the summer kitchen.

The real kitchen and bathroom were added around 1965. so, the outhouse was used until then

eta: I just saw your posts, girls. We can definitely have a girls weekend at some point

Erin, your a very lucky girl to have this as a dream home and farm!!!

I wish so many times we had been able to keep our farmhouse and land, but due to DH's job we had to move.

Sandy, that is so sad about your farm. I want to cry right along with you. Times are tough right now and we almost lost ours too. My dad was able to get his loan modified and cut the payments down. (He refied a couple years ago to purchase some properties to flip in the worst possible time.. talk about buy high sell low) Anyway, we HAD to move back if we wanted to keep it. Now, I cannot believe it took me this long. We had the windows open last night while we slept and the rain was tapping on the tin roof and I felt like I was 15 again in my room overlooking the mountains... just like a dream. And, we heard NOTHING! no trains, no planes or cars... or tractor trailors!! (My house is on the corner of a very busy intersection)

We are working now on how to get my dad back here. There's not enough room for all of us in the house and we sold the development rights years ago to the park service as we are in the view shed of the Antietam Battlefield.

We are thinking of rebuilding the old bank barn and making it a residence inside or just making an addition on the house. My cousin builds timberframe structures and the barn thing could really happen. I'll be checking into what we can and cannot do and what we could possibly get federal grants for this Winter.

Man, I don't check in for a day, and miss 3 pages. Geesh... Sandy, thanks for chiming in-you really changed the tone of the thread, and got it back on track. And the pic of your little one on the pony is just precious. Erin, your place is just gorgeous, girl! Love the pics after the rain. Y'all are going to be so happy there, I think. We've lived out here in the country for 10 years now, and I couldn't imagine moving back to the city. It's just not me anymore. And how cool that you've moved back to your childhood home, and will raise your boys there? That's awesome.

Oh, and Sandy, don't think you're going to Erin's without me....

I would NEVER move back to the city! We've been in the country for 11 years now (it's been my life's dream) and wouldn't even think of ever going back. Hopefully the city does not encroach here...that's about the only good thing I can say about the recession, the threat of development is no longer looming over everyone's heads here. Every subdivision around has stopped.

I am just now getting to this thread. While I admit to not "knowing" horses, I admire and love them! Thank you for going with your heart and giving this old man a home! I do dog rescue, and just this week, my best friend adopted a older female mastiff, most people wouldnt even look twice at a large older dog with NO history, but she did, and has the best friend to show for it! Hutch will bring you many happy memories! Keep taking photos! I like to photograph an animal once a week in the exact same spot to see the difference in them from the day we got them until they leave us!

MS&E, thanks for your support. I just love mastiffs. My best friend, Miss Bear, was a rescued rotti. She was about 6 when I got her. I worked part time at a humane society in Lake Placid, NY. (lived with some loser boyfriend up there for awhile
hmm.png
) She came in out of a good home but, the mother and her daughter couldn't keep her in their small apartment and the landlord said she had to go. She had been in an abusive situation before that and they took her in to find her a home. In that 6 weeks that they had her, she had bonded incredibly to her deaf daughter. She wouldn't let anyone near her. When I went to get her and take her to the shelter, she would growl and whine at me. I sat down and didn't look at her and she eventually made her way to me. The daughter came up and hooked the lead to her and was crying. Miss Bear was terrified. Once, I got her outside she was a different dog... very scared and helpless. She cried the whole way as I literally dragged her 4 blocks to the shelter. I felt so bad for her, I stayed in her cage with her for an hour to calm her down. She was in my lap the whole time. She growled anytime anyone looked at her so she remained in solitary confinment... with no hope of ever finding a home
sad.png
The other staff was terrified of her so.. it was me that fed, cleaned her cage and took her for walks EVERY day... even on my days off. Well, y'all know what happened
lol.png

I grew up with rotties. My dad always had one for groudhog control and as a companion. So, I knew the basic temperment. I had no idea what training she would need and I was young... probably 21. Anyway, I took her home much to my boyfriend's disapproval. ..maybe because she growled at him every time he looked at her!!
lol.png
The relationship with the guy faded but, me and Bear were a team and were best buds for many years. I took her back to mother and daughter's to see her before we came home and Bear leaped up on the couch next to the daughter and I was so scared she didn't love me as much ... pathetic huh? Well, they said their Hi's and loved on eachother and, as soon as I stood up and said, "well, I guess I'll be heading out now" ..I didn't get to "I" and Bear as at the door! She was mine
love.gif

When I met my current husband, Miss Bear was cautious but warmed to him quickly. It's funny.. we would joke around and wrestle and Bear used to always "save" me.. Then, one day... it switched and she "saved" him!! What!? What was this. She would lay on his lap and wanted his attention. She was always my dog but, she really loved Rusty.

Miss Bear died the Winter before we were married. She had bone cancer and it broke her back leg and was rampat throughout her entire body. She was probably 8 or 10. I laid on the floor with her that last night as she couldn't get on the couch or upstairs for bed. I didn't know her leg was broke. It was apparently a small fracture but, there was no hope of recover. She did sleep and I rubbed her hair all night... I knew. We had her put down the next morning and buried her on the farm... at the end of the hay field.

That Spring Rusty and I were married on the front porch (I'll try to dig out some pics) It was beautiful.. A perfect day. no clouds. no humidity. no bugs... just perfect. We had our pastor give thanks to Miss Bear and her love and friendship that brought us closer as a couple. Cheezy right? But, everyone that knew us said it was perfect.

There something to be said about the everlasting loyalty and love from an adopted pet.

..didn't mean to go on and on. Once I started, I couldn't stop. Stil love Miss Bear

What beautiful memories you have of her!! We just went through the same thing with a rescue Boxer, we had to have him put to sleep on my birthday August 20th, while a horribly sad day for me, it was also a good day because I know we let him go without pain, and suffering.

I adore rescues I really do, I am sitting here typing this with our Boxer, Chihuahua and 2 cats laying all around me, and they are ALL rescues!

I am supposed to pick up another Chihuahua today from the SPCA to foster, My husband keeps saying we wont fall in love with this one, shoot I have her named already lol
