Hutch the Halfie **The Last Chapter on Pg. 18**

Looking good and yes he does need groceries!

time to clip that mane for that traditional Halflinger cut! I hope he has that black stripe down in the middle of his mane!

He look fine to me...A little thin but his coat tells me he isn't sick or too far gone to bring him back....Like I said earlier...mountains out of molehills....Hope he works out for you

What a handsome boy. He'll have weight on him before you know it. My mom has a haffie and a haffie cross. She needs to keep an eye on them or they become ticks on pasture alone. Thank you for taking him and giving him the home he deserves.

Given that you suspect he's older than what she told you...and that happens all the time, everywhere...and his condition/lack of muscle, you might want to have him tested for Cushings. It could save you a whole lot of wishing if he doesn't put the weight on. He may need a medication for that. Glad someone got cracking on his teeth pronto, though!

Very glad you got him. Based on how Halflingers are built -a stocky, sturdy animal, he is extremely under weight - check the size of his head in comparison to the rest of him, the trick is to not try to get the weight on him too quickly by feeding a lot of grain and supplements, just let it take a little time, 2-3 months or so. I would suggest he is tested for Cushings disease and insulin resistance because the way the texture and length of his coat look in the pictures, but hopefully he doesn't have either.

I think you're thinking of Fjords. They're the only breed I know w/the black stripe in the mane.

X2
Halflingers usually keep long blonde manes. Fjords are the ones you are thinking of.

I hate to be the nagging voice of reason and I know you were all excited to have the horse there, but I am distressed by the young child on the horse, with NO leadrope, NO helmet and NO hope of staying on if he were to suddenly decide to move away ... i know he's broken and beaten down now but he will start feeling better... and why risk a child's life for a photo? I'd be less distressed if there were someone standing at the childs side.

I applaud you however for doing this for him! He looks like he'll be a great pony for years to come!

That's my husband standing right there with his hand on his halter. Yes. he could've probably reared up and bucked and twisted and took off down the hayfield. or... he could've did exactly what happened.. nothing. But, yes, my husband had a hold just in case. We are excellent parents and I don't need another "expert" on this forum to try and make me feel otherwise.

Is that a pit bull for your avatar? I think I would be taking much more of a risk with that dog full grown and in my living room than with my son on that sweet horse and my husband holding onto his halter. Accidents happen all the time and.. .from what I've read about in the paper... many more accidents happen from pit bulls in which everyone "thought was a friendly dog" than putting a little boy on a lazy pony with daddy right there by his side..

You know what would be really funny.. if you didn't even have kids. It seems like those are the ones who are the most "concerned" but have little experience justify those concerns. If you think that was not responsible, you should see my 1 yr. old when I buckle him into my 3 yr. old's power wheels gator and watch them go flying into the field full blast!

I guess they'll grow up strong... livin on the edge

And, yes, he was lazy and slow and I was being an adult and judging the situation as it unfolded and making a responsible decision for my children. My son was giving him a hug and asked if he could hop on. I thought the situation was under control and really let my hair down on that one. You know, I almost didn't post that photo because I knew there would be some nag trying to show how much more knowledgable they are about horses and whatever else... never fails
