Hybrid Pheasants

Pics
A major problem with people this day and age is the try to pass off mixed birds as pure and then someone innocently buys the impure birds and mixes it with something and then they sell it claiming its a pure. This is what I have seen recently and am appalled by it. This is how all of our wonderful breeds of birds have started to become nothing but pure uncertainty and complete loss of intention. I believe if you don't have pure birds and you KNOW IT, that is just absolutely the wrong and unethical thing to do. And even if you think it's sterile you never know so guys just please be more careful with what you do! I can't stress that enough!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_hybrid maybe you need to read this. If Hybrid pheasants can't reproduce then how do we have several colorations of Goldens? Which are all the result of crossing a Amherst Pheasant with a true Red Golden. Same thing with crossing a Kalij with a Silver...a Siamese Fireback with a Borneo/Malay Fireback... Temmincks Tragopan with any other species of Tragopan...the offspring can reproduce. Same thing goes for Peafowl, im very skeptical of who I buy my Java Greens from now, because its so common that they have been crossed up. Many people I visit that thinks they have Java Greens actually do not...its a bit sad. Like I said, whoever wants to produce Hybrid birds, thats their business, but there are some still out here who like to preserve the species. Im simply stating the danger that Hybrids can and certainly have caused, and its not because they were produced, but all because people are irresponsible with them. And yes... Some Hybrids cannot reproduce.

Which hybrids exactly aren't fertile (I thought the point was that all of these are, infertile, but there are just many different kinds of goldens).

I'm also wondering if there are pheasants that just aren't cut out for the pure bloodline without being hybrids or mixes.

I doubt ,most people intended harm on the species, even if they do raise hybrids. I agree conservation is important, but I don't think saying everyone who likes or happens to have hybrids is the cause or doesn't like conservation.

Some birds are just color mutations not necessarily hybrids or mixes or crosses. My thinking behind the whole mixing pure with impure or pure with and different kind of pure is that they wouldn't have been created in the first place ( by God or whoever you believe in ), if they couldn't survive. I do agree with you about not everyone is out to destroy them but, it's the lack of knowledge and people's laziness that is making everything worse and harming all of the different kinds of pheasants ( and other birds and creatures ). That's what gets me inflamed is others stupidity and ignorance. But the bad thing is even if they arnt out to harm the species they don't realize that they are just contributing to the whole species and diversity wipe out.

I absolutely agree

As long as you don't intend on selling them as pure or market that they can be mixed with pure its not as bad but still is frowned upon, but if the birds you raise are specifically for your own pleasure and not sold/given/received by anyone else I don't see a problem with it , up until you try to breed the fertile crosses. That's where the problem begins. And then you will start to lose control. Genetics are a more complex thing than most people believe. The entire problem is, is people who innocently breed a creature with another see it, like it, replicate it, and then it becomes essentially a trend and then the trend overshadows what we started in the first place and that is to breed the beautiful creatures that were put on this Earth. But then sooner or later those creatures are wiped out of existence solely because of a trend ( generally ).

It's not necessarily exclusive to byc it's just a general description of what can typically happen anywhere at anytime. I'm not trying to be rude at all. What you do with your birds is fine, and completely up to you I'm just disappointed that people see something, they like it, try to do it themselves and contribute to the mess up and down fall of a species doing it completely innocently ( sometimes ) and not realize what they are doing. It's just sad that this has come to this and I'm not trying to target anyone directly either. I would just prefer people to look at the big picture before they make thier move, that's all.

So, what if you know what you're doing, don't intend to breed pures and leave thst to experts, and don't plan on to breed your hybrids?

It is fine if you know what s you are doing but did the other breeders know what they are doing I mean on this forum breeders advertised they can hybrid and crossbreed which I suggest must keep quiet now other people which not have the knowledge will try it because they seen the possibility to mix and it will go out of control like aldren mention above here. I mean I grow up with these birds and never thought this hybrids was possible but now the world knows. It will interesting how must effect this thread have on the world and the future of pheasants in their pure form. The heat is warm now and it gets hotter so hot you can hold it anymore till you let go because IT S GOING OUT OF CONTROL and a out of control fire is devastating...

I honestly don't think this thread will impact the world significantly at all. People here either research or sight-see. It's not a zoo or pet store to just buy something and leave, there's a strong 'am I doing thi right' vibe here.

However, it's nota conservation forum or something huge and mainstream that touches the masses. Because this is about help, research, and experience, forum-goers already have that mindset when they come here.

From what you've taught me, in fact, that analogy is taking things a bit far. Extinction is bad, but the phrasing sounds like all pheasants everywhere will die out in a matter of minutes.

It's good to be concerned, but there doesn't seem to be anyone here to convince. Acting like it's the end of the world or like people are monsters isn't a solution. Your localnews station, pet stores, wildlife associations, zoos, and youtube would be better outlets and they might respond beter to something toned down a bit (comparing this to burning alive or an out-of-control fire tends to be dismissed.)

I wish you luck if you try those things, but trying to push this thread as something genocidal doesn't belong here.
