Hypochodriacs. Do you know any?

One thing I noticed about cancer patients, they were very laid back about getting their blood drawn and no drama!

Exactly! Once you've worked oncology, you have the whole illness thing in perspective. The worse they are, the less they complain. I've found patients quietly crying with their pillows soaked on either side of their head from the tears and they won't ring their call light and ask for pain meds because they "don't want to bother anyone".

Of course, with some of the nurses I've worked with, it could be that the nurse acted like such a butt each time they had to give the pain meds that this patient had tuned into it and just didn't want to catch any attitude...they have enough problems without dealing with lazy, surly nurses.

Wowie! The number of phsycologists on here is amazing!

Come on. Just because someone suspects they have something that might be hard for staff to diagnose, does not just mean it is mental. This is evidenced by the amount of ignored complaints from people who have serious undiagnosed medical problems, that have to go to multiple doctors to finally get an answer. Too many doctors and medical staff are TOO jaded if you ask me. Massive trauma and iminent death are not the only health issues worth attention.

As someone who does have OCD, I am a little insulted with this lumping together of all phsycological conditions.

My best friend in high school was a hypochondriac. We were still friends for several years after high school, but it got to the point that I couldn't take it anymore. I got sick of her being sick. She is on my facebook list now but we don't talk or see each other anymore.

Yes. I was a single mom and couldn't afford to keep paying copays every time I missed work ( I was already losing money from missing work!) when all the dr would do is tell me I have cramps. He and the dr's before him never even tried to see if there was a reason other than cramps and infections, they just always went with the easy diagnosis to get me out and on to the next patient.

I think what most of us are referring to is far different than what you had. Yours was an ongoing specific issue; to me a hypocondriac is someone who always has something mysterious and undiagnosed going on with them, often the latest ailment that has made the news.

I'm glad they finally figured out what was going on for you!

Careful who you label a 'hypochondriac'! Lots and lots of people called me that until a wise nurse anesthetist insisted they run some far fetched tests on me which resulted in a 14 hour brain surgery. I'm well, now, by the way. But for years people (my own family) thought I was just lazy and wanted out of work so pretended to be sick.

Awwwwwwwwww, so sorry to hear that.

I agree.

That's how I felt. My "friends" and "family" always acted like I was lazy or trying to get attention. Oh well, I found out who my real friends are, and am healthy and happy now.
