I am amazed that some of you don't get eggs.

Hello Larry,

The first two seasons were straight laying for us too

and then going into their 2nd winter...comes the huge molt
old.gif
blown feathers everywhere and few or no eggs

During and following a molt, I can swear by the need to feed them extra protein everyday (moistened dry cat food) until egg production and feathers come back.

Another thing that happens is people get more chicks and start mixing their flocks which can further reduce production because the original flock dynamic is upset.

I got my chicks in mid sept. at 3 days old. There are a lot of feathers here and there for a while now. I was told that they are molting, but not so much that they look bad.

Will they go through another (bad) molt next fall too? Do they do this every year? I am confused because everything I read said that fall is the time they molt, but then mine were babies then and they seem to be doing it now.

Hi everyone I have a question or maybe just a quote I have 5 chickens but it seems to me that we are getting about 8 eggs a day from them is this supposed to be happening? and if not I dont want them to get stress from having so many eggs plus my kitchen is getting full of eggs..

So what you're all saying is that I need to get more chickens every year. I have no problem with that, but I wonder what Mr. Hallerlake will think.

I'm jealous! I have 17 that are between 10 months and three years old, hybrids and purebreds, and I haven't had an egg since the beginning of November!!!!!
