I am angry and need to rant.

Iw ould also like to point out I have a college degree in web design and development.. and that before Walmart employed me I had been unemployed for 7 months after the company I worked for folded.

My student loans per month exceed $800 but I barely bring home $700/mo.

I've been looking for another job since day one of being hired. I have found almost none.

I am part of temp agencies and have my resume on several websites on the internet.

I can not find a full time job anywhere.

edit: Also I'm not complaining about being part time/not getting benefits, I'm complaining because my last 2 paychecks and my next few paychecks are going to be less than $250 BEFORE taxes!!!

as long as you have worked 30 days, then apply for unemployment. You can back-date to when your hours were cut, or should be able to. Then your waiting week will already be over.

yeah it can be tough, the last company I worked for went out of business owning me 2 months wages.
your degree should let you work for a lot of places on-line or remote, contract, or freelance... I know these are tough gigs to get, but I've done some of that. not necessarily steady work, but you can bring in some additional here and there and it helps.
there are lots of websites that have freelance gigs listed that you can bid on.
you can market yourself locally - might not be a lot of money in it at first, but you can build a business. I'm looking at doing that because I took a 50% pay cut for this job.
the world has changed, anymore you have to make your own way.

I have managed a franchise of a large company, and at the local level, 2 things are a given. One is that you never give full time, because full time is eligible for benefits, and two is that as long as you are good reliabe help, your hours won't be cut. Especially during the busy time of year. Around here, 35 hours is considered full time. Anything less than that is part time.

I hope your student loans have been deferred due to economic hardship. I seriously cannot encourage my kids to go to a 4 year college. How many college graduates are drowning in debt working at Walmart? Its crazy!

there was recently an article in Time about this. Kids graduating with a degree and hundreds of thousands in debt. One girl had loans over $300K and an "arts" degree. I don't remember in what, just a liberal arts program.

OP, that is a very good suggestion though. Be sure to call and get your payments deferred.

Does the new person make less an hour than you? If so, that is probably why they are getting more hours than you. And probably saving the company at least a buck or two.

I should mention I do not shop at Walmart, well maybe once a year.

Desirai, where in Alabama do you live? If in or near a large town, what about waiting tables? Even in this bad economy, people go out to eat. The restaurants are packed, and you can make good money, lots of it cash. And you can work part time, all different hours. Maybe it would be good enough to quit WalMart.

I agree. My nephew works at a Sonic and his tips are 4 times his straight pay. He makes more than his dad and he works at a Home Depot. Don't give up Desirai, there has to be something better out there. I used to work for Wal-Mart in Maintenance and was a full timer but I found something better, at least pays better. You just have to keep looking, don't give up.
