I Am Doomed- LOL

Question for those of you with pallet coops, do you find that the wood decomposes rather quickly? I've always wanted to use pallets for outdoor ideas, but I'm afraid of them falling apart.
I have just built a new coop with some pallets strips along the top for ventilation. They are not touching the ground so they should be O.K, but can easily be replaced.

Thanks everyone! So the main consensus is keep the pallets off the ground. Do you all coat them with water sealant just in case, or as they are? Glad to read about some pallets lasting for 4 years!

Yeah keep them for direct earth and I coated all of my pallets with a wood preserver to stop termites and stop red mites living in the cracks and to preserve the wood for longer.

I've had my pallet coop out in the elements for about a year and it is doing just fine. I chose to use the oak pallets since that wood is harder and won't deteriorate as fast.

How can you tell the oak ones apart? All the pallets look the same to me

I love your pallet coop! You did a great job. Pallet Coops are my new favorite. I have one coop made from all new material and then I have 3 pallet coops and will be building a 4th pallet coop in the spring. I started with my first coop built from plans and all new materials and it was just way too pricey. The pallet coops look just as nice and cost hardly anything

Well, if this blasted Chicken Math doesnt rein itself in, I am going to recycle all the pallets in a 20 mile radius LOL....we began with 9 Buff Orpingtons 6 wks old (which have been thinned to 5 birds now due to 5 being Roos) and then came a trade for 3 of my BO Roos, and then....we are up to 30 birds now but have a coop with the 5 BO, a coop with Aracaunas and EE and then our mixed flock of 5 RIR, 2 BR, a Red Star and a Jersey Giant, both lay everyday.

While we are only getting 2-3 eggs aday right now, I am sure that with 18 hens, we will up that number come spring time...there are 4 of us in the house that eat an omlet each morning so we go through 4-5 dozen eggs a week....plus, since we try to recycle everything in our house hold, this will stop adding to the "Leaning Tower" of egg cartons we have now...

Ok enough typing, I think I just saw a pallet...
