I am new to an incubator can anyone help?

LG is known to have many problems (unstable temperature and humidity, deadly temperature spikes). This was my first bator, and I am not alone having low opinion on LG.

You can read lot's of horror stories on BYC regarding LG "performance".

If you want to sleep at night get something else.

I have been using the LG still air for 7 months. We have two other hovabators. One is over 15 years old and needs wafer replaced which is why I picked up the LG. I have hatched at least once a month in the time I have been using it. I check my temps at least 3 times a day, sometimes more - every time I turn. I have had 1 temp spike - more than 1 degree - and I was not here to catch it, and had a low hatch rate from that. Otherwise I have had no temp issues. My temps only fluctuate by 1 to 1.5 degrees depending on day of incubation.

DH's grandpa used to do it in a 5 gallon bucket and had 100% hatches most of the time! Everything I have read says 100.5 but we run ours between 95 and 100 usually. We have good hatch rates - 97-100% out of our own fertile eggs. Less for shipped eggs or eggs that may have questionable fertility. We try to keep on 95 degrees in the Hovabator with the auto turner.

Main difference I have noticed , for us, is the day of hatch. 96-99 degrees hatches on days 21-22 and 100 degrees hatches on days 19-20

I agree wholeheartly the LG is Junk, but she already made the mistake and bought it, I sure hope her child won't be too disappointed when the LG craps the bed as we all know it will. My only suggestion now is that she go to church and pray alot.

Thanks for your input al6517

I was many times in trouble here before, daring to bash LG, styrobators in general also water heater thermostats.

But new users need to be honestly informed what works most of the time the time, and what "works for me" (sometimes, but this "sometimes" is never mentioned).

Nobody should be confused by arguments like " I have an LG and always had great hatches" or "water heater thermostat works great for me".

Well some people claim they stick eggs in carton box heated by a lightbulb and they have "great hatches".

That might be, but it is not recommended for a new poultry enthusiast, likely having a busy lifestyle.

And many people on this board are quick with ill and arbitrary advice forgetting than a few months or years ago they never seen live chicken before.

If that offends anybody that's TOO BAD.

LOL yeah your right in all aspects........................... but when we try to respectfully educate we get slammed, I just hate reading so many post about how something goofed but never a thought to equipment and sound judgement. Ohhh welll we will just keep driving on and do our part I guess.

Ok so I received my eggs in the mail yesterday and am setting them in the incubator tonight so that I am home to make sure there are no temp spikes or humidity issues.

I appreciate everyones input in helping me prepare for this endeavor. I am sorry if my my choice of incubators has people upset but unforutnately there are not other options on short notice like this is. My daughter just decided to do this so it was going to be cuttin it to close to order from somewhere and have it shipped.

Am I scared that this will not go smoothly but I have no choice but to go forward with what I have to work with and at this point I feel confident with many of the people that gave me advice to get set up and to proceed with this project.

I have my temps at 99.5 and it has been holding steady since I got it straight on Friday. My humidity is holding at 30% and only dropped to 28% once.

Wish me luck!

And yes I did go to church and pray alot for this to work with what I have to work with. so please have positive thoughts and save the negative commentsregarding my choice of the LG incubator. I have what I have to work with and there is no other way to get something different to now.

If I can get just a couple chicks to hatch it won't be a failure in my eyes.

Thank you

I will keep you posted of how things are progressing along.
