In the last 3 days my 2 best laying hens are gone. No feathers! nothing... I don't know what happened to them. My chickens are free range and when they go in the coop in the evening I latch the door and they are gone in the morning. I live on 20 acres and don't know who would come onto my property and take my hens. I ended up having to put a dead bolt on my coop. what is wrong with people?

you should double check and see if they have not gone broody and they are somewhere hiding.

no I know they are not broody..plus if they are there in the coop in the evening when I latch it why are they gone in the morning when i open it? I don't understand what someone would want with my hens. I have thought about that and that is in the works. I had my husband install a light on the house that when someone walks by it the light will go on and then he installed a new latch that i could put a master lock on. i just want to cry. my other 2 hens are broody right now and those hens were giving me my only eggs plus they were my fav.

Im so sorry - that is terrible. It is bad enough losing a hen to mother nature - but a thief! Unforgiveable. Dont apologise for your language! I'd be using fowl language too!

Sorry for your loss. There are decent game cams at walmart for $50. If there is no rain forcasted put some flour down to see tracks. My area is mud now ,so I get prints easy.

I have a large dog drate in the garage if I need to move the hens there for a short time. Perhaps an alternative location if the coop is somehow not secure. Amazing how well aminals can get in through a very small opening! Humans are just as bad breaking into a place.

To bad you can't put out a leg trap! Maybe a pan with some roof tar for them to step in,lol. Stinging nettle in pots.

Sad, we aren't even in the crazy govenerment/social system breakdown yet and people are stealing from neighbors.
