It sounds to me like the sheriff doesn't have enough evidence to prove who did it. Not that he doesn't want to help. I'm sure he has his suspicions as well but he has to have the evidence. Too bad he doesn't. We never did find out who was killing the pits here. Nobody saw anything and the little evidence there was lead no where.

We were told Animal COntrol would investigate but when I called them the next day I was told they were not going to investigate because at that point it was a criminal matter. Go figure? The local newspaper did run a story about the dogs and at least the story was told.

Animal control is SUPPOSED to investigate criminal matters involving animals. Who is this guy related to?
Make a stink. Have your SIL-to-be get a lawyer and file a suit against the sherrif saying that because they refuse to even investigate such a clearly hostile and violent act he is afraid for his life. He can be next.(He doesn't have to believe it, just start to sue and watch things happen)

Call the newspaper back and have them do a follow up.

Call the local TV news and give them the story. Even better - call the one of the nearest big city or rival county and give them the details to do a piece on Small Town Injustice.

Call the ASPCA and let them know how well that county is following animal cruelty laws.

Also send pictures, exact names, etc to the mayor and nearest senator.

I would contact my representative and county prosecutor. Someone should be made aware that the sheriff isn't doing his job.

I'd call APSCA too and see if they have a division office near you or something. Animal cruelty is illegal, so how can they no investigate 4 dogs being shot point blank?

I'd call my States congressman or go higher up than that little o'l sheriffs department.......

Why cant they get a search warrant? I dont believe him..i'd go to the DA or someone higher...
i'm very, very glad this didnt happen to me..my neighbor would end up missing..
