Yikes! PA is beautiful, but dang... the bears do get brazen this time of year. Call the game warden.. NOW! That size bear that close to your home is cause for serious concern. Hey SunAngel, not to get you really going... but DH saw a bobcat on the fire road in South Mountain last summer-- they had a staring contest in the middle of the trail!

someone will re-locate him

They 'relocate' bears like that here. They take them 200 miles away up into the mountains and drop them off. I found out first hand a relocated bear can get back home within 24 hours.

The USFS told me that it happens often. It seems like the big, bold male bears are the worst for returning to town.

I'm in favor of dispatching the ones like the OP encountered, that have no healthy fear of people.

You know BFeathered, I have sworn several times I have been outside and heard the weirdest wailing/crying/howling (not sure how to explain it) in the woods and swore it was a bobcat or mountain lion. Just sounded too big and too strange to be typical small creatures. I really really hope they stay up on that mountain and leave us alone!

Me too! DH says he thinks the "cat" was just as startled as he was... They're pretty shy and don't usually come into the open unless they're desperate or sick.

From my long ago studies in wildlife management I sort of recall that a black bear has a home range of 50 or 60 MILES, so relocation would have to be almost out of state to be effective and even then, how many places in the eastern US has 50-60 miles of contiguous space with no human residents.

I vote bear stew! I'll bring the vino!

Ummmm.....how about keeping the garbage in bear proof containers? I'm wondering why there was a big pile of trash left out in bear country in the first place. One poster on this thread was criticizing people who feed bears, but it seems to me that's exactly what the OP did -- whether intentionally or not.

What exactly is an acceptable "bear-proof" container? Last I checked, bears are pretty strong with an awesome sense of smell.
