There are many many companies that sell bear proof containers. Just look here:

http://www.google.com/search?q=bear...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Or, if you don't want to buy something, you can find info on building your own at some of these sites:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...ar+proof+garbage+"build+your+own"&btnG=Search

Or, if you don't want to do any of that, you can simply keep the bags of trash in your garage, basement, laundry room, or so forth until trash day.

There are many many web sites with general information on how to live in bear country. Here's one:

If a 500 lb bear decided to feed at my house I'd have a few more worries than paying $200 plus shipping for a new garbage can to keep food trash secure. If he can't get the trash, I'm sure eventually he'd find the chickens or something else on the property to nosh.

Can we at least agree that one would not feel safe with a large bear wandering around the property and that a reasonable course of action might be to harvest it this hunting season and put a lot of tasty meat in Shellie's freezer?

I would not wait for hunting season. That is a dangerous bear. It is now used to eating people food and trash. It won't stop at your trash. You have to protect yourself and your livestock, doesn't that what the law says? I would be so freaked out. Bears are the one thing I am deathly afraid of. Good luck.

Read my post again. If you don't want to buy new cans, there are other options.

If he can't get the trash, I'm sure eventually he'd find the chickens or something else on the property to nosh.

You could be right. OTOH, he probably wouldn't be there in the first place if the trash hadn't attracted him. As another poster on this thread noted: "The bears stay up next to the new houses and the S.O.B.'s up there feed the bears!"

Well, the OP fed this bear too. If somebody leaves nice smelly food out in bear territory, don't be surprised when a bear shows up.

It doesn't really matter at this point how or why the bear got there. What matters is getting rid of it QUICKLY.

I hope you can shoot it. At least you can use the meat!!

Bear "removal" and bearproof trash storage are certainly not mutually exclusive. And the latter is something that can be done now, and will have lasting effects in terms of preventing you from trolling in other future bears to cause problems, too.

Good luck,

Pat

Not to change the subject, but frozen paint balls hurt!! They made it to where people in city limits have to have these special bear proof trash containers, and if trash is left out, and it attracts a bear, it's the homeowners fault for leaving out attractants. were are always reading about how the person was cited for leaving out their trash, or animal /bird feeders. Many times we have read about fish and game relocating problem bears

If you do remove what ever the bear was eating, keep an even closer eye on your chickens...he knows there is food at your place, and if it's not what he was eating, he will find another source.

Other than neighbor dogs, bears are my biggest concern, and we get the biggins here in Alaska...

ooo oo, i want to know what the warden said!!! come back and tell us, that is SO scary! i am married to a warden, and i think i would shoot that thing even if he told me no, and just deal with it! what if you hadnt noticed, and he got you or your DH!!
