I would have to say that a trip to the dump is in order if you have that much trash laying around. I understand how much it can pile up when moving, but it needs to go.
He didn't get that big by being stupid, if you secure your trash (or get rid of it) and there are other food sources nearby that are easy to get to he will go where the easy food sources are. Right now, your trash is the easy food source. As long as you leave it out in an area that has bears this will be an ongoing problem, even if you shoot this particular bear. You need a good long term solution.
You will also need to electrify your coop. If he is determined to get in, he will, but again you just need to make it harder for him to get to them than the easy pickings up the street.

I think a dumpster with a really sturdy chain would definitely help deter him. I really don't think it needs to be totally bear proof in your situation, just enough so that he'll leave your property alone for easier pickings. If it doesn't work you can always go for something more substantial, but a seriously chained dumpster is a good start IMO.

let me tell you how I would handle it.
First mistake was not telling the game warden there was an imminent threat of attack and you were about to kill this bear. I did the same with a stray dog once except I live in town and called the police. Three minute response time lol.
Second ,as you know bears have a reallllly sensitive nose. My choice of paintballs would not be frozen but peppered. The police use them now for non lethal supression. 5-6 shots to the head and he`d still be running.
Third,build a concrete block enclosure with a steel door for the trash. Construct the top like a chimney so if he gets in he cant get out or gets stuck so the lazy game wardens have to truck him off.
Question, is there a regulation against feeding the bears? A few choice pix to the game warden might get some one on one counseling from the game warden, especially if the trash enclosure works.

Getting our wardens to actually call a bear a nuisance is quite a feat. Don't be surprised if they choose to protect the bear and tell you to stop feeding the birds and keep your garbage secure. I live in bear country and have at least 8 active bears on our land. The DNR has been no help at all in regards to control of the bears.
The solution that I have found....only works with a female and cubs. You have to tree her and the cubs and hold them at bay for several hours. Make her uncomfortable and convince her that this is not the place for her and the kids to be strolling and foraging. Right now the bear has you feeling like the one in danger. Bears are afraid of you. They do not want anything to do with humans...except for our waste and easy food.
To fix a male bear try one of these two methods.
1. Fry a pound of bacon...or two if you like bacon. Enjoy your breakfast. Get a can of aerosol paint and wrap and tie or tape it in a t-shirt or towel. Saturate your wrapped can in the bacon fat and hang in a tree. The bear will not resist this. He will also experience quite a scare when the can releases it accelerates and paint. Most likely this will be inside the bears jaws when it happens.
2 Make your bacon for breakfast but only eat half of it. Attach the other half of your bacon to a single strand of electric fence wire and create a perimeter with the wire. When yogi comes back for the trash/eggs/layers...the bacon will lead him astray...and the voltage to his tongue should divert him back to the woods where he belongs.
These 2 methods I have heard to be effective but have never tried myself. I chase bears...I bang pans...hoop and holler. I growl hiss snort and shriek. This has always caused the bears to leave and leave fast. I have also seen a 550lb bear jump straight up and over my 6 ft fence. Always leave yourself an escape when dealing with large predators.

I finally got thru this whole thread.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and prolly get a bashing for my thinking.
Do you think maybe the trash is keeping him from going after your chickens? I don't see it as baiting, if it were baiting, it would be dead and filling your freezer and stew pot already....right??
I hate to say this, but once you remove that trash, I bet he goes for your chickens...or something else on your property.
I have one question for you? Do you have a freezer big enough to quietly store "him" for 3 weeks or so?
