Come to think of it there would have been kids there if it wasnt a Sunday. The problem is the day care is so close to our house that sending it back to the woods sends it back this way. It needs to not seeek out the dumpster and stay back in the woods.
EDITED TO ADD: Got one it isnt the best...
The dumpster is yellow the white on the ground is some of the garbage. The basketball hoop is in the driveway along with lots of ride on toys and bikes. There are a few more trees to the left before you get to the main building. It looks like a plastic dumpster to me.

I would hate to be Equus5O on here because she is the only rep of police here in our state that I know of on the board. The hands of the police can be as tied as ours. I would not want to be the officer dealing with the BEAR people or the dumb rules. I bet bear control wasnt one of the dreams of the officers who signed up for training! More than any she has to be straight and narrow on her path. I believe our police come everytime we call but I could just as well go down and blow my whistle. I think from now on the cops AND fish and game will be called. I even got a laugh out of the people I saw today in town hall when asking about a bear problem and they were like what bear problem didnt you hear the govenor we don't have one. Thank God primarys are tomorrow... bye bye Corizine! I so hope...couldnt happen fast enough. I will be working from 5am till 8pm tomorrow so my birds will not be seeing any sun tomorrow.

I don't own a gun (yet, I am such a chicken though) so maybe I should make more of a fuss. I think I will take those LONG hours sitting tomorrow to write the article. Watch, one of the B.E.A.R. people will be working with me. I told Mom2Cool I would write... time to let the trama out and see where it goes. Oh I got a pic of the dumpster with the garbage on the ground. It was from far away so I will see if it is worth posting.

I think I will start the article offf with: If one more person tells me to get rid of my chickens....

Actually asking for help on Freecycle one woman did say that totally curious and not offending and I replied. I think I will incorporate that in the article. Think BYC will be higher in the Google rankings because my daughter named her ducks after the Jonas brothers??

Here is some of what we wrote.

I don't mean to be flippant, but why don't you just get rid of the chickens? Just a thought... Sorry I can't help you out.

Hi,

Because (and I do not mean to sound harsh) why should I. I have every right to keep my own livestock. Why should I have to get rid of them. If it isn’t my birds it will be someone else's (and it has been a lot of others). The bear has killed goats, and horse's also not just small animals. The danger up here is VERY real and I am not just talking about one bear I believe it is 3 different ones from what I can tell so far. Everyone has the right to farm; it is where all your supermarket stuff comes from but usually in states where they keep control. Think about it for a minute these are some of the things I can not do because of bear overpopulation (not just because of rogue bears) I can not feed the birds. I can not leave any pets outside nor anyone in the area/dog cats birds in cages anything. I can not leave my 14 yr old daughter outside by herself to play. I can not leave the house without scanning the area before I step out the door. I can not leave my car door open while I transport groceries into the house. Just recently while someone was stopping by a friend they left their car door open and while the food was out of the car that she was dropping off for the friend and THANKFULLY the child wasn’t in the car a bear got in a ripped the heck out of the car, for no reason. The bear doesn’t eat my chickens it rips them limb from limb, scattering beaks from heads and blood covering the walls, puncturing the pigeons chest...and what did it eat, maybe one it ran off with. If you really want to see what it did to me last year go here: http://hopeslongstruggle.spaces.liv...otoAlbum:380047c3-f813-4f71-9fc2-4034d53d4c89

It is so bad that if not this year, which would be a shocker to most of us up here, there will be a killing or hurting of a human.

It is really serious and the fact that the woman in charge of the BEAR group trying to protect them was illegally feeding them and had about 12 visit her neighborhood often endangering her neighbors is really scary. Animals above humans… well the bears above my chickens anyway. Almost every other state has laws to make the population manageable. They are all much safer than we are. Not to be snotty but a bear shows up in Bergen County and it makes the news and they take it away, let it show up here and we are stuck with it! I hope you hear my hear tone on this, nothing was said in a mean way it is hard to convey the emotion that goes with this and I don’t want to seem to be attacking. We just live in different parts of a state where the same issue isn’t dealt with the same or the problem as severe. I lived up here like 7 years with no bear problem but there are to many and not enough food to feed them. It is very very unnatural for a bear to have 5 cubs but they are having them up here. If there are no room, no food, and no predators for the parents, where are those babies going to go? Into our homes, and they do. According to fish and game there are so many cat.1 bears up here that the traps are all being used and because I haven’t been hurt or my birds killed I am not even on the list for a trap. A bear has to kill livestock, hurt a human, or do damage in excess of $500 then it is considered a cat one bear. How scary is it that there are so many out there! Last year I had to wait for mine because they were all used! I had night mares and couldn’t sleep for months. I truly am terrified. I live in fear. I just need to find some ways to make this easier to watch them till something is done. Hope that helped show you things from this side. We love our chickens as much as people love their dogs . My daughter loved her ducks, Kevin Joe and Nick...thank God she did not see the bits they were torn into.

Thanks for asking,

Warrior, I can only imagine how hard it must be for Equus50 and I sure do give her credit for all that she does for the people she protects. I really didn't mean any disrespect, I sure hope she knows that and didn't think I was attacking, because it sure wasn't meant as an attack.

Good luck on your election tomorrow, lets hope ya get someone who isn't brain dead.

I have an uncle that is on his last leg, when he goes I may make the trip to Ridgewood. I will bring my 2 friends and take care of your problem. The bear people can come visit me in Ca. if they want, won't do them any good.

Ok I'm a bit confused... While I'm all in favor of keeping my girls safe from predators, is the answer REALLY to kill a bear who is trying to survive in an environment full of people? I didn't read anywhere in this thread where the bear was aggressive in any way towards humans.

If you're in NJ then this is a black bear. Black bears ALMOST NEVER attack humans unless you're between mom and cub. (Dogs kill more people in this country than all types of bears COMBINED! In 2008- 3 people were killed by a bear- one was a bear trainer. In contrast 23 people were killed by dogs) They're shy and fearful of people, even the ones who live in populated areas.

Wild animals don't choose to live in populated areas- we take the land from the animals and build on it and then call it 'ours'. (Just like what was done to my ancestors- American Indians!) It would seem likely that animal control could trap this bear and relocate it if it's truly a problem, but what if it's a female with a cub?

The best bear deterrent is to remove outside food sources. Keep garbage and animal feed in metal cans that the bear can't open. They'll snack at bird feeders & etc but things like that aren't enough food for them to return for a meal. Bears are smart but lazy. If your chickens are not accessible to them they shouldn't try to eat them. Bears are omnivorous but are opportunistic feeders.

I'm sure this opinion will not make everyone happy, but it's how I feel.

NJ has a wildlife over-population problem, not just with bears, but from what I hear deer, too. When the food supply is too small to feed the number of animals in a given place then problems arise. Bears have been an increasing threat to everyone because they are not able to find enough food. An animal will act out of character if they are hungry enough. NJ needs to institute a hunt, but can't because of a small but vocal group of loony tunes that feel bears have the same right as humans. It's a rotten situation that puts everyone in danger.
