The bears in question are no longer shy and fearful. They are being fed and encouraged by the B.E.A.R. activists so that cute video can be taken of them to further their cause. If you think they are so safe, maybe you can volunteer your backyard as a relocation spot. A large predatory animal that has learned to enjoy human food and is no longer afraid of people is a danger to people.

Yes, habitat is dwindling. Do you think that homes shouldn't be built for people? Perhaps we should give up our homes and increase habitat. You first please.

It doesn't do any good to clean up your yard if the B.E.A.R. people are next door baiting them. As far as keeping the chickens safe, coops (even really good ones) won't stop a bear. Do a search on the forum, and you will see that the OP has had a bear previously tear through the walls of her coop.

I usually check before I step outside too & I check real well if the dogs are barking. The nice thing about the dogs is that their noses often pick up the scent long before the bear gets here & so if they alert me prior to it getting to the split rail fence I step out on the deck & instruct it to keep on moving & I just stay there until I see it start to move down the driveway. I always feel bad doing so because I know it mmeans it's moving down to my neighbor & I'm not sure if she can hear me give a verbal warning. I'm always amazed at how such a large animal is really so very quiet.

Horsejody I don't know if you've seen some of the latest videos but they very scary. 1 of them she's basically rocking a bear in the hammock... There should really be a law against such interaction with bears.

We just met but after reading your post, I think I'm in love with you!

I absolutely, positively could not agree with you more.

To the OP... you do whatever the hell you have to do to protect those birds, yourself, and your family. A gigantic, few hundred pound, ticked off, hungry bear ain't nothin' to take lightly, particularly if the aforementioned bear is rumbling around your backyard thisclose to your house and your coup.

Well, if the laws of man don't stop her, the laws of nature may. Sooner or later she might killed killed or injured by a bear.

yes and I think her wanting to live among the bears had me thinking the situation reminded me of that guy who was trying to live with the Grizzlies in I think it was Alaska or maybe it was Canada. But I think they killed & ate him.

The New Jersey Fish & Game Department has released the following press release:

In light of the rising frequency of human to bear conflicts, the New Jersey Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field. "We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should be able to readily identify bear droppings and be able to tell them apart from other wildlife droppings. Black bear droppings will have little bells in them and smell like pepper."

Not only him, but his girlfriend as well. He actually was able to live with them for a year or so......until he got eaten. The only real tragedy in that case, IMHO, was that he talked his girlfriend into going with him the last time.
