Would they consider bringing in the feeder at night?
The wild birds don't eat at night at the feeders. They can put it out when mom is awake. At least in the season where the bears are so hungry.

"ETA: I just looked it up, and actually Treadwell had spent **13** summers with the bears before he got eaten. Just an interesting tidbit"

That is definitely the funniest post I have read here yet, bar none. And I spend WAY too much time here.

I agree, this situation is absurd, of course. We have the right to protect ourselves and our property. Yes, there are too many people, and we are moving into their habitat. But the solution is not to feed the people to the bears.

Well, that rivals the last one for the funniest. In another sense, though, it's not funny at all, because it's absolutely true.

No, I didn't call F&G. Local cops came out and conditioned her and I haven't seen her again. I was hoping that she, the dog and the cubs all learned a lesson that night. Talked to my neighbor yesterday and he said that the drama the other night was a mother and 3 cubs so I bet that was her again. There are 100's of acres of forest around here for them to live in. My biggest problem right now is with 2 males. Neighbor has a bird feeder and they keep coming back to it. Hubby has talked with neighbor but it hasn't helped. Neighbor has an elderly mother who likes to watch them. They should be out of here within the next year or 2 so hoping the problem stops them. I watched the videos of the bear lady and it makes me so angry. Yeah, they are shy but only for so long. Rocking cubs is just stupid. She is creating a problem for those around her one of these days she is going to have one turn on her. We will be getting electric fencing around the coop but it would cost too much to do the whole yard, we have 3 acres.

yes see I'm on a 4 acre lot too but I already had the split rail fence prior to the chickens & that fences in just the back yard. I did that to keep my dogs safe hah! You know if the dogs bolt out & chase a bear that's on the inside of that fence the dogs are fast enough to catch it, but you know what will happen when my dogs corner a bear right???? I'd had more than 1 close encounter with what could have been my worst nightmare. Anyway back to the fence set up and when we put in the electric fence hubby went around the split rail & the elctric wire runs along the top of the split rail all the way around. So it isn't around the entire 4 acres here either but the back yard is roughly 3/4's of an acre. It wasn't all too expensive I think the transformers ran about $100 & then there's the poles the wire attaches to that attaches to the split rail posts & of course the wires/white tape. I should find a pic for you so you can see. Anyway when we started the electric fence hubby knew he had some cleaning out to do around the split rail because anything that touches the electric fence with short it out so it turns off so all vegitation has to be cut back. Because he had such a large area to cover to start we put up a first line of defence around the coop itself first. We used the white tape going around the coop because we wanted people at the start to see it because of course it's something that is new etc. So now we actually have the first line of defence going around the split rail & then we've another going around the coop itself the one that goes around the coop is also I think 3 or 4 levels of the white tape. Now we've got 1 portion on a solar transformer & the other on plug in transformer. They solar packs the same punch & the plug in I understand my pool guy keeps unplugging when he comes to vaccum the pool & doesn't plug it back in.

Anyway I just wanted to let you know they're equally effective, hubby did it himself & he's not really a DIY guy, the plug in hasn't had that much pull on the electric bill but I feel better about the solar panel & all in all it wasn't all that expensive... certain sections where people walk we used the white tape first because we started with that not really knowing & then in places where people are going to walk through I want them to see it & the sign for it.

Ok here's a pic of it going around the coop & we'd had left over posts from the split rail going around the back yard so hubby used them to make the other poles real steady & I liked the idea of the gate so I wouldn't need to turn it on & off going in & out.

It was 2 nights after we put that thing in that hubby got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom & looking out the bathroom window it was real dark but he could see some lump in the grass just outside the tape fence & he figured it was a bucket or something he'd left but thought "wow it sure looks like the outline of a racoon" he'd thought he'd seen it move but then it was so still he thought he was just seeing things (you know in the dark of the night groggy etc) than the next day the "bucket" was gone...

He said it must have been a racoon that grabbed the tape & was sitting dazzed.... It's very effective & really packs a punch.

Don't you love those electric fences! I use them all over my property with the solar chargers and I think they are wonderful. You accidentally touch them once and you don't do it again. They pack a wallop!

Hello I know nothing of electric fencing. Not presently having predator problems, have had them in the last few months, but not recently. Several times bear on deck inches from window, my mother and I on the other side, shaking in our nighties. It was getting into our grill and bird feeders. We put both away, then the coons started coming after our trash. Built a box for the trash.I bought chicks was made aware of this site and have been in the background learning, learning and still learning. I'm ready to make my run and have been following this thread due to our bear, coon, fox and coyote encounters. There is electricity in the coop but if the solar panels work as well I think that I would like to try that. Thanks for any info you could impart.
