very nice! I made a rabbit hutch once it was supposed to be square it turned out horrible and everyone laughed at my hutch
I never tried to build anything again.
My suggestion is instead of sand to use wood shaving. You can get thm cheap, they last a long time, keep the smell down, and you can easially use like a dust broom/scoop to clean it out place in a trash bag or as we do put in a wheel barrel to take to the compost bin.
LOL I think they will definately like it~ I'm not finished adding little decorative toiuches to it yet~ my girls shall be Queens in this house! More pullets~ it's so addictive especially when people post all these cute pictures of fuzzy butts on here! I think it would be exciting to gets some eggs once a female goes broody and have her hatch some! I definately will give it a try. What kind of pullets will you be looking for?? I wish I could keep my boy beauty I would love to sing duets with him!! I'm slightly jealous of your singing party
Haha
She has not come by yet!!!! But I know she'll want to see it so I will have to show it to her before I move the girls in and load it up with all my daughters play things. I figured the nest boxes was a great storage compartment for books and some dolls
From looking at it one may not guess it is a hen house
That was the whole idea behind it~ once she see's it it's over and I can go about introducing my girls to their new home! Good luck with yours next week!! What kind are you looking to build and for how many chickens?
I love the fact you got that for free!! I actually just called a roofing company that was in my neighborhood and I'm going to ask them for some of the scrap roofing paper for my hen house~ I don't want to pay all that money at Lowes I dont need that much! I do already have the shingles though
Very smart my dear! Yours is definately going to cost less than what it cost me~ Haha I've been doing everything in increments I haven't noticed it being to expensive.
Roofing is right around the corner!! I promise I will take lots of pics for you
I will go check out your pics for your coop to~ Thanks for the cheers!

See I'm torn~ I would think the cleanup of the sand would be easier than dealing with shavings. And if I clean it up everyday~ there should not be a problem with odor. There is alot of ventilation to circulate air in the coop and my girls will only be locked up in here during the night and during bad weather~ otherwise they will free range. I would think with shavings all kinds of bugs and insects would be attracted to it, where as sand I think would minimize insects as well~ plus it would be easier to spot them. I would only have to scoop out the clumps of sand and compost it verses changing out all the shavings? I would think also in the long run sand would be more cost effective. I would like to hear other comments about it~ I don't know until I try! But I do use shavings for the little pullets right now and it can stink just after 3 days! So that is not what I want to happen in my hen house

Thanks, but don't give up an trying to build! How dare they laugh~ if I were you I would keep trying to build something awesome and make them grovel in your success, may teach them a lesson!
Yea I use sand for other pens, but in a box like thati found the shaving work great, inside a house with chicks yea it can get bad. I like the shaving cause I can use it for a long time before cleaning and it is easy to clean cause it scoops well. You only need a little bit a large bag of it from TSC last a long time cause i put the extra in a garbage can. Keep this in mind I have 13 outside pens, with differnt kinds of chickens. 4 of them are mobile for fresh grass, 6 of them have bantam chickens that i keep sand, 3 of em are for larger birds and i use pine nuggets (pine nuggets attract bugs for them to eat). The rest of mine are quail and chicks I have in cages above ground in a open barn. I find sand enclosed like in a box like you have doesn't disappear like it does outside on the ground. Even the pine nuggets, I do nothing cause they scratch it once a month I might kick it around or rake it to get it even in the pen.
OK I finally moved the Hen House outside!!! Saturday night I had built the legs for the planter box and painted them to match. I measured out and cut the floor, painted it and attached it to the base. My brother came over Sunday morning and we carried the walls outback! We got one wall up and just put one screw in it (thinking it would hold it steady) since it sat level. Then my brother lifted up the second wall and went to line it up and totally knocked the wall down!!!!!!!!!!
Haha The whole street probably heard me scream his name!! LOL The wall was ok~ but it freaked me out so bad when I saw it hit the ground~ but it was sturdy as can be
So we got the other walls up and screwed them together. I attached the braces I got for the walls to hold them extra sturdy. Put the roof on and thank God for my brother!! I'm 5'5 and the roof peak was at 7.5 feet!! My brother is like 6'4 so he was awesome and nailed the shingles on for me! We went to Lowes and picked up this Roof cap that works awesome! We had flood rains on Sunday and Monday afternoon~ no Leaks!!! So we are good and almost completely finished
Here is a view from off the patio (I know the makeshift ladder is laying crooked~ I just put it out there for kicks to see if the chickens would go up!!) No takers yet
I LOVE this planter box! It came out so cute and it makes the side of the hen house look so pretty.
Pretty Flowers!
OK so I got this awesome deal on this vinyl sheet flooring~ so I picked out a wood color that matches my house! (my dad thinks I'm nuts) I cut it to size and used this painted trim to screw it into place.
Purty Shiny Floor~ that will soon be covered by layers of sand!
This will be their view out the window!!
Inside View of the ceiling!
Nest Boxes~ still have to cover the opening beneath here but I'm considering another hardwire mesh screen to allow more air circulation!
Doors wide open view...
Back and side view...
From a distance view...
This is what I can see from my family room window...
Well that's my update! I have to build the roosts inside which I will make from natural brances! I'll be picking up some sand this weekend for it and also designing the feeders and waters. I'm so happy to have it outside
