Would you like to help me sex my 5 little black silkies? (#1 is a bit younger and it's feathers haven't come in as much as the others) They are all still a little young to be sure but it's fun to guess...

Hi! A friend of ours gave us 3 "laying hens", and they should start laying in the next couple of weeks. However, I am starting to think the Rhode Island Red is a rooster. It's much bigger than the Barred Rock and Cinnamon Queen we have. Also this morning it was grabbing a couple of the other hens on the back of the neck. All the "experts" my husband talks to are saying the RIR is a hen, but I'm not sure I agree. Please let me know what your opinion is! Thank you in advance!View attachment 1096468 View attachment 1096472
Definitely a rooster

I picked up this red chicken about 6 weeks ago. She came from the feed store and had a huge gaping hole pecked in the side of her neck and a hurt leg. She's doing perfect now. I do not know the breed or the sex. I think it was an Ideal straight run. She doesn't look like my red sex links. At least I hope it's a she.
Too young, please post again in a couple weeks.

The RIR is a rooster, hens don't have those pointy hackle/saddle feathers.

The only obvious cockerel I see so far is #5.

How old is it?
