We got the lecture today from the doc. Both of us were free spirits in general, but the wife never drank. Both of us smoked. I've quit since I found out she's preggers, and she's been trying to quit (down to 6 a day)... any advice for a hubby who wants his wife to kick the nicotine train?

3 weeks till the ultrasound and knowing if its a boy or girl

are you guys wanting a boy or a girl??

as for flame retardant, i make my kids nightgowns and stuff so i guess i dont have to worry about that, since i use 100 percent cotton.
i think i had found out about it before but forgot, but they have baby magic detergent, so im going to stock up on that. i love all of the baby magic stuff..some people dont use baby powder but i just love how mine always smell when i dust them with it after their baths.

*when they were babies of course!!!*

i dont smoke but honestly, i dont think its THAT bad..i am not an expert but i have known tons of people who smoked during pregnancy and their children were fine. i mean, i wouldnt start smoking but if you are already addicted, just cutting back is better than nothing at all.

It is great that you stopped smoking second hand smoke is nearly as bad for the fetus as smoking because the smoke can be inhaled by others for 30 minutes after the last cigarette because it is exhaled by the smoker and stays in the clothes.
Try not to nag too much about her smoking instead focus on the positive and encourage her in the positive things she is doing like excercise eating right and seeing her doctor. Go with her to the doctor and see if he recommends some ways tat a woman can quit smoking while she is expecting. ( I don't know if a pregnant woman should try gum or the patch) Lastly try the number 1-800-no- butts.
It is a valid number here in Ca. they have very good info on helping parents to quit smoking

you guys might know..is it the smoke or the nicotine that is so harmful?
i wonder too, if she could try the patch.

About the caffeine and nursing question--

I always drank a little caffeine while nursing. It never bothered DD. I usually had (and still do...) one coke for lunch. (Except I drink the Jones Soda version without high fructose corn syrup.) Occasionally while nursing her I would have a little coffee or something.

I think caffeine can make babies gassy or fussy, but if you drink it in moderation and it doesn't seem to bother your babe then it's fine!

Get a soft nursing bra (they make some really comfortable ones at Motherhood Maternity) and get some cloth breast pads. Cloth is soft and comfortable, and you can just wash and reuse rather than buying them and throwing them away all the time.

I think leaking is the only downside to nursing! I slept on a towel for the first two months after the baby was born because I made waaaaaaaaay too much milk.

Robin'sBrood :

Got to share this with you other expectant moms...

Yesterday when I was having my teeth cleaned my hygienist asked if I was going to do a nursery for the baby. I told her he has his own room but I wasn't going to go out and spend a fortune on baby bedding this time around, since I'm not planning on having any more. She said she was selling her son's nursery set. I told her I would be interested in seeing it, so we set up a time today for me to meet her after she got off work to take a peek at it. This is what she had...

... and she had EVERYTHING that goes with it. Isn't that cute? I bought it!!!!!

Oh my goodness. I absolutely LOVE this!!! You must ask your hygienist where she got it b/c now I'm jealous!!

If it makes you feel any better I also had a large bleed (bigger than the gestational sac) next to the baby around 7 weeks and passed a lot of blood/clots. The doctor told me it was just something that happens in a fair amount of pregnancies and MOST of the time it's nothing to worry about. I'm now 13 weeks and it has totally resolved. Good luck with everything!
