I Can't Do This Anymore!!! Thor's Ship Sailed.

Did the morning chores, Helga one of my blues is not taking kindly to the saddle. She is still in reverse, sulking terrible and just acting weird. Poor thing. Hope she gets use to it.

Helga without saddle.

Everyone else is OK. Thor isn't quite sure to make of things.

I got them their hay bale (no straw), they LOVE it. They are so distracted by the new toy that even Helga has forgotten that she has a new accessory. I freshened up their pine shavings to. See this is all I want peace on the farm. Not to mention a pretty nice day to. 37* for Maine ain't half bad.

Now I have another issue, OR I am over-reacting.............

Fern, one of my other blues, has a swollen spot on her comb, no broken skin, no sneezing or respiratory issue just a swollen, pale floppy section of her comb. I would say it is the back quarter of the comb. Could it be from Thor? The weather, a sign of something worse. I'll keep an eye on it of course. Oh, her comb hasn't turned that bright red that they get when they are ready to lay yet.

I tried, I really did. I have to let Thor go. I have him listed in the BYC for sale section. I just don't want to know if he is dinner.

Other than that the flock is doing fine. Well, once head feathers grow back the girls will look just fine.

When I read the first page of this thread my thought was give it a month or 2 and you'll be ready to get rid of him. Sure enough.... Roos that cause injury are just too annoying. Eventually no matter how much you like them you want it to end and the hens to be happy. Personally I don't think making them all run around with saddles 24/7 all year round is a good solution for the flock. They get to be more uncomfortable and you get to deal with putting on and inspecting the saddles all the time just for 1 annoying rooster when there are dozens of good roosters losing their heads every day. The day a bunch of my hens were looking torn up and 4 adolescent roos were attacking my legs I was ready to whack heads off. It didn't matter it was well below freezing out. I gathered them up right that second and stood there freezing in the snow while I butchered every one of them. I keep my older roo around and any that behave. I hatch plenty that behave. I learned not to name them until I know they will be good roos because if they aren't it only makes things harder. I'm having a big debate with myself right now because I named a bantam roo and then hatched a much better roo of the same breed and color that isn't related to my hens. I probably can't keep both so it's get rid of/kill the named roo who has major flaws or the good roo just for being the one I didn't name. Logically it's a stupid debate. I should know better than to get in to this situation.

Not only the hens, but DH is going stark raving mad with the crowing. I really need to get rid of ol' Thor. My marriage is worth it.
