I can't imagine living in the North....

Oh, I'll remember I've never been cold when I go out to open the coop in 4° weather with a windchill of -29°. Thank you for letting me know that really isn't cold.

That weather is why Polartec was invented, and I own many forms of it.

It's not anymore fun to go outside in the cold than it is in the extreme heat. It just takes more effort in an attempt not to freeze to death. 5 layers takes awhile to put on, take off, and then realize you forgot something just as you start to thaw.

Who said anything about fun? Although I can have plenty of fun in the winter, on cross country skis, in subzero temps, with the proper clothing on. In the heat of the summer, I don't even want to go outside. So, I will take the cold anytime over the heat. You will never hear me complain about the temperature in January or February. You will hear me complain bitterly when it's over 90° and 95% humidity.

I hate it when I get all dressed up for the frigid temps, and then I have to go P.

and if the kids want to go out with us to do chores, it takes longer to get everyone dressed up than it takes to do chores in the first place!

And those of us in the South look forward to the dog days of summer when all it's feasible to do is lay around, eating ice cream and sipping sweet tea in the A/C all day. When it's time to feed the chickens, slip on an oversized t-shirt and be quick about getting it done.

AMEN!! I loooove summer!
Quit reminding me!!! Winter isn't even officially here yet and I'm already sick of it!

And by the way, during those dog days you can plan to get your outside chores done in the early morning or late in the evening, when the heat is at least bareable.

Well.........sorry, I don't know what fair you attend or who's horses you're referring to but their owners need to be horse whipped! There's no excuse for that I don't care what the heat is! If it's that hot, they shouldn't be workin' 'em. That's ludicrous!

Just had to get in on this a little. I live in Northern Wisconsin. The weather is brutal. I HATE winter, but I was born here, and my family lives here. But my DREAM is to move to somewhere like Tennessee. We have driven to Florida a few times, and everytime I drive through there, it is just beautiful!!! They get winter, but not like here. I just imagine us living the country life there!!!!! I hate that it is usually always so cold here that I can't let the chickens go outside, and I miss seeing them running around out there. I just pray that our winter isn't TOO terribly bad this year, and pray for an early spring!

On another note, someone had mentioned saving a dog. That also happened to us. The other night, I got home late from work, and hadn't seen the chickens, so my daughter and I went out to pay them a visit. It was about -8 degrees. They were nice and warm in the coop though. Our Golden Retriver, Jake came with us as he likes the chickens too, and would defend them from any predator! Any way, Jake was outside waiting for us, and he started to bark and growl, so I had him come into the coop with us, I figured something was out there, but thought it might go away while we were in the coop. When we turned and walked out of the coop, something was waiting for us.... it was a puppy!!! About 3 or 4 months old, just standing there shaking and crying. I had it follow us to the garage, and noticed its ribs were sticking out. It was starving. I had the kids get some food and water for it. It ate it in 2 seconds, drank some water and then went over to a bench we have in the garage and curled up and went to sleep. It was so sweet!!! It probably would have frozen to death that night if we hadn't taken it in, as the temps were to be -20 that night. The next day, myhusband brought him to the Humane Society. I hope he finds a great home!!!

I've got to wonder why anyone would even NEED to wear 5 layers! ???? You're not dressing right if you need that many. I'm really sorry to jump you Akane because I really like Iowa and Iowa folks for a lot of political reasons. I think Iowans are extremely progressive and I have a hard time buying a lot of the stuff you were saying about Iowa, particularly about horses routinely collapsing at the fairs. I own Percherons and the National is out there; I just find it hard to believe that the horsemen are that thoughtless. I know for a fact the Percheron Association is VERY careful about overheating and overstressing horses and I don't think they're so very different then any other clubs or working associations.
As far as being cold, I know I've been cold and when you said 5 layers that just sounds like too many clothes to me. You can get packed in too tight, and if you're clothes are too restrictive, you're going to get cold. If they're the wrong thing, you're going to get cold. It's all in how and what you wear. I was born and raised in Ohio and lived for 6 yrs in Wyoming, believe me I know COLD!! It's actually much colder here in Ohio because of the humidity, but you need the wool and the polartec stuff and only a couple or three layers, more than that and you can't move and you start getting C"OL"D!!!!
I can't say that I love the cold, but I HATE the heat. I just can't take it. That picture of laying on the couch and drinking tea, all splayed out unable to move because it's too hot makes me sick at my stomach. It gets that hot up here and I pray for those days to pass. Maybe it's because I consider them a waste of time, I don't know, but I do hate them and I worry about my animals as much in the heat as I do in the cold, maybe more. I can keep them warm, but I have no defense against the heat, particularly for the chickens.........shade, and that's it.
As we've all concluded..............it's different strokes for different folks, and if we all wanted to live in the same place the world would topple over............
