I confess...

sheaviance1, I understand your limiting yourself until you know how it goes. I started w/ 58 last year, with the plan to process the cockerells, about half. DH and I did that last fall. I made it. Then, winter came. Coldest and snowiest winter I can ever remember. -30's actual temp, let alone the windchill. I made it. I loved chores and never complained. DH was very proud of me. This spring, DD-11 and I processed 6 roos all by ourselves. I cried the entire time, but I did it. Now, DH is VERY proud of me and doesn't say no anymore. He saw me love it at it's worst. He whines and rolls his eyes, but he doesn't tell me "no". (except for peacocks.

) By the way, I won't process by myself ever again. I'll wait until DH is able to help....

I totally understand. I had a similar experience with processing my first time. I was literally shaking. I'm good once the deed is done, but the killing part is too hard for me. Dh is going to have that job.(afterall, it was HIS idea to process extra roosters)

I don't have a problem.

I only went from 5 to 29 chickens in the past year. And those are just the ones that are here. I have plans to acquire more, but don't tell the husband.

And I thought my addiction was bad...85 are you serious?

I think I would love that, but I'd have to move out of town for that many.

This is turning into such a guilty pleasure. It was wonderful before (wow, an entire 8 months now!) but I hit and exceeded my legal limit two months ago. And yet I could not stop myself buying two ducklings, and then driving out to a farm a week later and picking up two bantam cochins. So that was four over the number of fowl I am legally allowed.

Then I bought two Silver Sebright chicks two weeks later. And a week after that, two more chicks, a bantam cochin to "replace" the bantam cochin pullet that is really a roo - now, what does "replace" mean? I'm NOT getting rid of the little roo, I am just getting a second banty pullet "for him." And when I bought the bantam cochin, I couldn't take home JUST ONE CHICK. So I bought a buff brahma chick.

I don't know how this got so out of hand. This last time, I KNEW I shouldn't buy any more, but I deliberately went to look for another bantam cochin after calling the feed store ahead of time to see if they had any. Why would I even call at all?

I absolutely love my colorful flock and it's gonna be so much more wonderfully colored when all the adolescent chicks and latest babies are integrated into it.

Hi, my name is Phil (Hi Phil)
I am a chickenaholic...

I accidentally ordered 25 chicks recently from Ideal.
I also accidentally put 20 large breed and 6 serama eggs into my Marsh Roll-X incubator. I am hand turning the serama eggs.
I am fencing in a full acre to roam my chickens. This is not inexpensive to do....

I feel I can stop anytime I want..

85 chicks? Good god, man! You going into the egg biz? I thought I was bad with my guys. I will probably have 30 when all is said and done.

This was from a mere 6 chicks.

That is awesome! Luckily we live in a neighborhood, so I have to keep it at least a little under control. That being said, we have 6 chicks already and 8 more ordered for the late summer.

I can stop anytime as well, I'm sure of it!

Man i am so glad i found this site. i am learning so much and driving everyone crazy with talk about my chicks! It is addicting. I love them! some for meat some for eggs all for fun. My husband indulges me but half the time i do not think he listens. But it is nice not to be alone. if i could get the funding and by a farm i'd be raising happy free range chicks for sure. But i do not have the funding so 7 backyard chicks will have to do until then! I had no idea that it was going to be a passion. i thought i was going to get a few hens and have some eggs and some meat birds. my thinking was that it was closer to the kind of sustainable living that i hope to have one day. it has turned into so much more. we lost two chicks i was crushed... so i bought 4 more. lol. well ia m going to go hang with the girls outside and give em some tasty scraps... thanks for being as chick crazed as i am

truly addicted!
