good on you. you have some major karma points coming your way.

keep your head high - keep on keeping on.

i don't have a clue about how to help with your actual problem - just offering sincere support.

Thank you so much for all the good karma and thoughts... I do have the worst ones separated from the others. I know this is pretty serious too and ALL of my flock is infected... I also have pans with bleach water outside the coop doors that I step in to make sure I dont take it from coop to coop also the uncles idea. Anti bacterial soap and lotion between birds excetera... I sure hope this works and I looked up the oxizine too and I will be asking my uncle about that as well. One thing I know is pigeon flyers HATE to kill if they can medicate and save. If there is a will theres a way. These girls have a will to live and I'm gonna help them! I'll be checking in in the morning. Thanks all!

If they have coryza and recover they will be carriers, you will not be able to sell any birds or bring anymore birds into your flock without them getting infected.

Before you try and "save" your chickens please please research what you will need to do in order to responsibly save them. You have to ask yourself if you are committed/prepared to do the following:

You will have to maintain a closed flock - no new chickens in (unless you want to see them get sick), no chickens can be sold/given away. You will either have to permanently separate the sick ones from the ones without symptoms or you will have to risk it going through the flock. Coryza is not a "curable" disease, any time any of the sick birds get stressed they will show the same symptoms - you will have to go through this all over again with the smelly discharge, the eye problems, etc. Stress can include something as simple as temperature fluctuations.

I know it's hard when they are like pets. Unfortunately because keeping backyard flocks is a relatively new trend there just aren't any methods to eradicate the disease other than to kill them. That's how farms have handled it for years because to most people the chickens are just livestock which makes it very hard to those of us who see them as pets to have to handle diseases like coryza.

So please give it some thought. It's painful to lose them but the work you are going to have to put into this to keep them where they aren't suffering might be just too much for you to want to deal with.

I'm so sorry you are going through this!

Please
read my thread. I had respiratory issues too in my flock. I thought it was coryza and I was wrong, it was parasites instead with a respiratory secondary infection. The only way to know is to take them to be necropsied at the state vet lab. Your vet should be able to give you the number to call, or you can find the information on the internet.
So far my state vet lab has not sent me a bill from september. Maybe it was free in my state.
I wanted to know so I knew what disease I was dealing with, and if I needed to cull my flock or not. I am glad I didn't cull on suspicions alone. My flock was treated successfully with valbazen and antibiotics.

I agree with you PonyRider, go for the save. Whereas this is not your way to make a living, the idea of culling to reduce losses is mute. I would give it a go and give the girls a hand in healing. As for the eye issue, I had a girl with a huge swollen eye this spring, and even though I was told not to and that it would hurt her etc, I cleaned the lid with warm water, and smeared on some neosporin.... 1 day and she was fine. If I had left her alone the other "ladies would have pecked that bright red eye right out of her head. I like walking the path less chosen... Good luck and keep us posted.

I have read that alot of you have highlighted the area of no new chicks and none can be sold or given away... Rest assured I have no intention of giving away my babies after doing all of this and I have already made a concious decision not to get any more!
But I do have to say.... This morning ALL my girls came running for their breakfast and looked better than they did all week! Maybe my uncle is right? with just the right mixture and a LOT of love and care they will lead out the rest of their lives happy lil pets!
