I found a hidden nest of 12 eggs. Two hens were the culprits. I put 10 eggs in a bucket and marked the other two, leaving them in the 'hidden' nest. That was yesterday morning. So the ten eggs have been sitting on my counter since yesterday morning, right? Well, I cracked 4 eggs into the dog's food, and some of them cracked in a way I thought was odd. Not enough calcium, I thought. The fifth's yolk broke apart like liquid immediately and had some blood in it. I ignored that and cracked the sixth. Into the dog food rolled a little itty bitty ball with a huge eye, and a 1/4 inch away from it was a beating heart. If it wasn't beating, I wouldn't have noticed it. I looked closer at the area where the fifth egg yolk was, and yes, there was a little itt-bitty guy with a beating heart, too. Well, I obviously felt REAL bad and stopped cracking eggs.

There's still four eggs in the bucket. I don't know what to do with them!
Plus there's the two in the nest.

These hens have not been sitting on the eggs. I don't have any broody's right now.

Question: If it stays this hot, will they hatch on their own without a mother hen? It gets to 115 in the daytime, and 90 at night. Why are they still alive in this heat???????

What to do? What to do????

Dog food? Or counter-top experiment?

I would put them back into the nest and just let them go and see what happens

I agree. But if you are too worried...I would invest in a incubator.

I'd put the eggs back, also.

That is sooo sad. I'm such a wuss I'd probably cried! I agree to put 'em back or bat 'em ...

Yeah I just got young pullets that aren't laying so I decided to go buy some fresh farm eggs... a few of them were bloody and two of them had a formation with an eyeball on them... It made me sick to my stomach.. Is this common?

No, not at all. I actually sell eggs, but since I found these in a hidden nest, I wasn't going to sell them or eat them myself. The eggs that I do sell have been picked up within a few hours of laying.

Sounds like you had someone who doesn't mind rooting around the yard looking for eggs to sell. Ack.
