Hello!
This is Daniel. He is a cuckoo Marans/Barnyard cross. Daniel has been about 90% blind, from what I can tell, since he was a chicken. He must be 4 or 5 years old now. He lives inside, because my flock has always free ranged. Daniel gets so worked up, trying to fight with the other rooster(s), that he rubs his comb bloody, against the sides of his confinement. His comb used to have majestic points all along it, and stand up straight. After he really tore the front of it up, it healed smooth, and gradually curled over.

About two weeks ago, I was holding him, and discovered two things. He has ferocious lice! Also, he had two, round, yellow crusty spots, on the underside of his comb. We are in the process of moving, and I'm ashamed to say, his condition slipped my mind, completely. Then, having found a property that we have decided upon, I turned my attention back to my critters, about five days ago. I washed his face, comb, and wattles with dawn, and put coconut oil on them. When, after a couple of days, there was no improvement, I tried Vicks. It was as though I had poked a hornets nest. The condition, whatever it is, has exploded. Now, white circles, crusty squiggles, and even what looks like hairy mold, between his wattles! I have not yet addressed the lice, because I don't drive, and have no apple cider vinegar. I do have white vinegar, however. Can I use that? I can't believe that I don't know this already, but in the past I had used cat shampoo, until it apparently killed one of my chickens. I have not bathed one since. I still feel sick to think of it. If I put white vinegar in Dawn, will that work?

Then, regarding the comb, I have bought minonazole 4%. I have not yet used it, however, wanting the input of you folks, first.

I feel like the worst kind of neglectful chicken keeper. I adore Daniel, even though he amourously attacks my shoes. I want his life to be as happy as possible, and he must be miserable. I hope that you folks can share your insight with me. Thank you so much!

No clue, eh? Well, rats. That's too bad. I guess I will just go with the antifungal, and put the white vinegar in with the dish soap, and hope for the best. I thought the three different kinds, or appearances, of the sores might be indicative of one disease or another. But, maybe the photos aren't clear enough. At any rate, thanks for reading this. Sometimes it is enough just to process things outside of my head. Thanks again.

Hey! I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I'm not one of the experts on the forum so I'm probably not of much help, but how is he on basics like eating and drinking? Is his poop normal? Is he acting under the weather?

If you aren't getting a lot of responses, it may be that the picture is unclear. If you could get a more focused shot, plus a before shot (because his comb situation is a little novel, to me the entire thing looks swollen and inflamed before I even get to looking at the spots) when he was last healthy, it may help you get better input. My gut instinct is to advise getting an actual medication that treats lice stat. I've used permethrin for mites myself, as I don't know how effective Dawn or similar stuff would be (or what any unintentional effects would be). Search on the forum for a sure-deal lice medication you can administer. If the lice are bad he's going to be at a disadvantage fighting off whatever is happening to irritate his comb due to the effects of blood loss.

Sorry no one got back to you. If I were to guess (and that's all I can do), I'd say it *looks* fungal. I would start there and see if it responds. And def treat those lice. Those would certainly make him miserable! Any permethrin based treatment will work.

For lice I would use Revolution kitten/puppy strength - I used it on my Roo and it treated it right away. I also used it for worms.

It’s very easy to use - like your dog or cat you just out it on the skin between their neck and back.

As for his comb and wattles - you can treat with canestin anti fungal cream you can get at any pharmacy.

Sunlight is your friend so maybe build a nice safe run for him outside and give him a couple lady friends to keep him company - chickens are very social creatures - keeping them confined inside is not normal and actually quite cruel for them. There are many here on BYC that have blind Roos and keep them quite well.

Good luck - keep us updated please!

Thank you so much! He is eating and drinking well. He is just a bit more clingy than usual. That always scares me, because I know that they do that when they need help. When I referred to Dawn, I just meant dish soap. I am too afraid of pesticide washes, after my disaster. I will try to get better pics! It needs a flash, though, and he resists that, of course. Thank you again! I appreciate the input!

Ivermectin works, too - on the neck, so not a wash. And there are powders, if that is more useful to you.

I totally agree with this it looks fungal just like thrush in humans especially down below causes swelling when it’s really severe but putting Vick’s on something that’s very vascular like a chicken comb is not a good idea. If it doesn’t improve you may have to go to a vet to get some antibiotics or anti inflammatory like cortisone because it could also be an allergy to the Vick’s.
