I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

I'm confused...

You have a large rear end?
Terry said you have a large rear end?

The horse needs a new saddle?

How did we get here....

We have to get a saddle for Gus. Terry said I was going to need a saddle "Bigger than a 15 inch"...thus, Terry said I had a large rump. This is common woman logic...stay with me here Spook.

I can see where this would upset many American women The whole point of the passage is how a man is to use godly wisdom to select a wife. There are equal passages of how women are to select a husband. These verses are meant for the young adults in the world. The Bible is often referred to as a two edged sword, the word sword is actually transliterated as a small dagger like weapon not unlike a letter opener and in that context it says gods word is like a fine surgical cutting device that knows exactly where to cut out the infection that begins the process of healing which by virtue is usually painful. I cannot say I like the delivery of this sermon but I cannot disagree with the content it has merit... Try it and see the fruit of it

Unfortunately this attitude is common. Well, at east around here in a highly conservative area. here it is mostly southern Baptists and Holiness. Many churches here have the women sit in the back and are not allowed to speak in church unless it is to correct a child or to approach the pulpit.

Even highly educated women who are the bread winners of their family (I know some personally) take the " Submit to your husband" to heart. I do know the rest of the text about how men should love their wives as Jesus loves the church, but I will not go into examples how this still proves utmost inequality, IMO.

I bite my tongue since it is their beliefs which they hold dear and they are usually pretty nice people. But what bothers me is the sense of entitlement many of the men take, and while they may not be as verbal as this preacher, the sentiment is the same.

It is unsettling to me, the inequality pushed by some, and I find it interesting how the more hard core fundamentalist groups in some of these situations cherry pick what to follow to an extreme. Some of the loudest shouters of these more extreme fundamentalist branches (of any religion but it seems more prominent in the groups that worship the god of Abraham, IMO) seem to focus their vigorous support on areas that involve condemning and subjugating others while not putting as much effort into the more humble parts of the text including charity without recognition, self sacrifice, and compassion.

I also find it interesting how quick some come to their defense. What is even more unfortunate is it isn't just men in these groups defending such behavior, but women too. Sometimes the women are even more vigorous in their defense.

But then, I was raised in a semi traditionalist Cherokee, non christian, household where women are held in high honor. It is a cultural thing for me and while I disagree (really really really disagree) with this sentiment, I can not truly apply my cultural view to this one.

Ed, I'm not arguing the bible. That's another thread entirely. I didn't even said I disagree with the man. I do, but I didn't say it. I wash the clothes here, I'm folding some laundry right now...but if Terry ever referred to me as "The washing machine"? I'd punch him in the face. It's the way this man is interpreting the bible to his own little chauvinistic ways. He's using it to keep women "In their place". That, is what angers me.

What I hear is you do not have a problem with traditional roles, but you do have a problem with disrespecting one's partner and their roles, and the belittling of his wife by implying she is a child to be controlled and molded into doing what he wants instead of his partner and wife who fulfills her side of the marital bargain while he fulfills his.

That is what meant about his delivery Em. This sermon is not coming from his heart but from his selfish ego. Anyone can read the Bible and throw together a sermon. You know when something comes from a persons heart that actually empathizes with the person struggling with a problem this guy was just parroting gods word.
